But no image at first.
In the beginning there was no word.

The instructor covered various usage rules, common errors, who/whom, etc. Good instructor, but the class pretty much hated the subject matter. I remember that at one point, she asked with respect to the subject/object distinction and it's affect on word choice, subject-verb & subject-pronoun agreement, and a couple of other things, she asked, "How many people think this stuff is a waste of time as long as the person you're talking to knows what you mean?" About 90% of he hands in the room went up. Shortly thereafter, she asked, "How many of you want to be English teachers?" Again, about 90% of the hands went up. Isn't there an old saying like ...
I know you think you understand what I meant to say, but don't realize that what I said is not what I meant.

A young man wrote a letter to Isaac Azimov asking for advice on how to be a good writer. He ended his letter with, "Please write back."
Dr. Azimov pointed out that he could never be a good writer if he used two words where one word sufficed. He should have written, "Please reply." My Dad was the director of the city library, and he had the largest vocabulary of anyone I've ever known. Once he pointed out that using arcane words that few people knew was not a sign of intelligence. It's not a good way to communicate with a large audience. Being perspicacious myself, I'm predisposed towards erudite explication using esoteric nomenclature.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

There is a balance I'd like to see.
Some words that have fallen out of parlance have a more precise meaning and use fewer words to convey the idea. On the other hand, if you have to stop and define the word or if the listener just doesn't understand what you're saying or is secretly mad that you've made them feel stupid these words can be counter productive. I see ambiguous or just wrong language all the time on the News. It bothers me because I feel like I'm trying to get the News through a bad game of Telephone. We are dumbing down our language and it will not be as good a tool for communication in the long run if we all take the easiest path for expedience in our daily conversations. I come from an admittedly odd family and we were always being called on our use of "25 cent words". My cousin (who stayed with us) was sent home from the third grade for saying a class mate was being obstreperous (they were jumping on the counter). The teacher thought it was a dirty word. Texting and emoji have not been a boon to communication as far as I'm concerned. -Mary Mowder |

We always had a dictionary close at hand in my parent's home, and later mine.
not sure the attention span of many today can handle words like sesquipedalian - or the concept. I am rereading books by Taylor Caldwell so that I can use some of vocabulary again.

My requested HS Graduation gift was a really good dictionary. I got it and loved it. I haven't been a book dictionary user for a while except for Magic purposes.
I'm a huge fan of spellcheck (you are reaping the benefit of spell check in my every post). I'm surprised vocabularies aren't growing when it is so easy and interesting to look up words on the computer. Doesn't smell like a book though. -Mary Mowder |
