Right now I'm really enjoying doing Nick Trost's "The Unknown Card", a very powerful packet effect.
However the `pocketing' of the unknown card midway the routine is somewhat clunky, and it seems to be screaming "switch". Any ideas for the handling or patter of this, to help draw attention away from this action or to provide justification for it? Are people still performing this trick, or have experience with it? I'd love to hear any other comments or suggestions that you've found helpful for this packet effect - it's a good one! |

In the event people aren't familiar with Nick Trost's "The Unknown Card", the official description of the effect by the publisher is as follows: You fan out six cards to show three face-up Fours and three face-down cards. The cards are turned over and re-fanned to show three Tens. An `unknown' card is removed from your pocket and inserted into the fan. You now deal the Fours face down to a spectator while you hold the Tens and the `unknown' card. Your cards are squared, turned end-over-end three times, and re-fanned. The `unknown' card is pocketed. The Tens are now gone—faces and backs of blank-face cards are shown! The spectator's cards are turned over and the Fours are gone! Finally you show where the spots went—they're on the face of the `unknown' card!

I love Nick Trost's magic. I guess that this brilliant routine has flown under the radar of many.

I love Nick Trost too, but this is one of those cases where justifying the plot is a half nightmare and justifying the handling .... well ... good luck to you!
I don't doubt you're getting good reactions from people, but I honestly think there's so much better stuff out there, worthy of our time and effort. I don't like it. Just my opinion of course. Mark |

I really don't see any issue with the use of the pocket in this case. However, you could use a H****r Wallet to avoid using your pocket.
I think this is a good trick, which doesn't require difficult sleight of hand, with a strong kicker ending. Are there better tricks out there? Well, of course there are, but I still think this one is pretty good. Marty |

Hadn't thought of the idea of using a H****r Wallet, nice suggestion.
I've performed this trick quite a lot recently, and nobody has questioned the pocket as being strange or suspicious. I introduce the trick by explaining that in my pocket I have a mysterious card with mysterious properties, which I need to keep it safe due to it's potential powers, so that helps manage the audience's thinking from the outset. When returning it to the pocket, all the focus is on the initial revelation of the tens turning blank, so that helps as well. It's still somewhat of an unusual move, but the overall impact of the effect in cards turning blank and then the amusing kicker at the end seems to outweigh this disadvantage. I've had a lot of fun doing this trick over the last month! |
