Hi all,
I'm putting together a coin routine, hoping to add some comedy to it. Living in the UK, I also needed some justification for using US half dollars, so... The idea is the American coin represents a tourist here in the uk- finding it's way into places it shouldn't be going (one coin routine), keeps following other people even when they try to get away (coins across), pretending to be a local (spellbound)... You get the idea! My question is, what FUNNY things do tourists typically do, either general or specifically a stereotypical American tourist? Any tourist related jokes would be appreciated too. Thanks everyone! |

Getting on the wrong bus, not understanding the money, getting lost, ask for directions, dress weird, try to crack up the guards at the Palace.

Thanks for the ideas- not understanding the money in particular definitely has some potential!
Also, did I post this in the wrong place or is it just a tricky one to think of? Very few responses... |

I was thinking of the same thing, I want to figure out a good reason to have US currency, when I'm visiting other countries. I plan on going to Japan for three years, and I wanted a good explanation...

I usually say (during 2C 1S) "and the Chinese tell me the half dollar is worth 50 cents".
But I never excuse the use of other currency. I never apologize for using something that looks magical. And I never justify why they are enjoying themselves. The minute you need to justify anything you are as much admitting that your cheating and you yourself don't believe in what your doing. If you just do the trick the audience will go for the ride but if you're constantly proving to them that what your doing is for a reason - then - you're not a close-up performer but a mentalist. I have never seen a movie where an actor tells you that he's using a prop, they just use it.

What is the coin going to do??? In that one coin routine. Like what are the effects? This can add to a story line.
There are other forums for scripting which are fun also and might get you some responses. Tourist bump into things and walk around paying more attention to the Sights then maybe where they are walking? Sometimes taking picture of silly things. Getting on the wrong bus is a good coins across idea! |

Coins across, wild coin, also gadabout coins I thought could fit- trying to fit in with/look like the locals, being an idea which I think goes well with wild coin. I like the idea of wrong buses for coins across too, thanks for that one! I didn't realise there were forums on scripting, thank you for making me aware I'll try posting over there

American tourists might...
* Take photos of themselves rather than of the country they've come to visit * Eat at McDonald's * Visit uninteresting but famous things * Repeat things in a louder voice if they're not understood the first time * Look the wrong way first when crossing the street (it's a drive-on-the-left, drive-in-the-right thing) * Call football soccer
It's still magic even if you know how it's done.
