I have been working on the old 'hindu' cut and restored rope trick out of the Tarbell magic course. I have two of the Tarbell type rope gimmicks. I have tried several types of rope, including magicians rope, and white thread, and several types of adhesive and I am not satisified with the result.
While misdirection and proper execution of the trick will more than likely cover any flaw I have, I would prefer to have an 'invisible' gimmick or much more 'invisible' than it is now. I think my technique for installing the gimmick could use some sage advice. Any help would be great, and don't hesitate to pm me if necessary. |

Grant,
Have you ever seen Jack Miller's version? It uses his "Holdout" and it is the cleanest, most magic C&R Rope effect I've ever seen...simple and clean. You cut the rope cleanly in two, and IMMEDIATELY throw it to the audience, it looks like it's restored in mid-air! You end crystal clean! Doug |

Sounds great but it also sounds like you need to have a holdout system (and Im lacking there right now)
Just by accident I have made a great gimmick but I am still interested in any advice. Grant |

By Accident? Well, actually, it just takes LOT of work and doing it many many times until you hit the right combo...
Don't be in a rush. And another thought. Why use gimmicks at all?

Well, Pete...you ever seen the Jack Miller C & R? You truly end CLEAN...no moves, no suspicious "tying", just cut and throw!

The Bill Neff Rope Miracle is similar in concept and appearance. You have two SEPARATE ropes. Then you have one, and it can be examined.
Or you start with one rope, cut it in half. There are two halves, then they are back together. |

I have never seen any good rope gimmick instructions. You do need the magicians rope that has a core of several separate strings. Remove some of the core. Insert the gimmick and cover with a 50/50 mixture of white glue. Wait til dry and trim with a exacto knife.

Are you referring to Bill Neff and Jack Miller's versions (I have never seen any good rope gimmick instructions)?

You're correct Candini. I think he's reffering to the Bill Neff's version.
I bought it back in 1975 and I'm still using it till today. I made a suttle change on the gimmick so that I can do the trick anytime in the show.I got this from the "Gen magazine" Richard Lyn |

I have two or three ways to do the Neff... the latest I call "shot and restored" where someone in the audience shoots a blank, the rope breaks apart, I catch the bullet in my teeth, spit it out and toss the two ropes up and they visibly restore.
The Jack Miller version is a piece of cake, but not as effective as the Neff. Check the Salvano video on ropes. He has some great handling, overlooked by many.

Ive seen Salvanios routine. For me the best is by the late great magician Sheigo Tekagi

Yes Takagi-san did a very nice, artistic, well thought out routine... I had forgotten. So did Eric Lewis.

It’s knot only – pun intended – a great eight-minute routine, but one can cut the routine at several junctures, for different time constraints, and it still plays really well. It’s the best I’ve seen.

Years ago I saw Dick Cavett do a Cut and Restored on TV with him sliding the scissors along the rope, and the volunteer telling him when to stop and cut. I was amazed then, and I never saw it done again. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, or even where I can find that version of Cut and Restored?
