We have a pal in the business and well I could ask him anything about security cams but what to ask him I don’t know.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

The purpose of casino surveillance is not to protect the guests going to and from their rooms. It is not to protect the maids or personnel working outside the public areas. The purpose of casino surveillance is to protect the casino operation, i.e., the integrity of the table games and to maintain a safe environment to gamble in. Casino operators are also legally bound to have video surveillance on all their table games. They have no choice.

Keep in mind, most surveillance is not immediate but rather its main benefit is the ability to go back in time to view possible problems that have come to light and to have proof of what transpired. The article seems to imply that casinos operators are derelict in not having video surveillance in the hallways and other non-casino area. In fact, most of the bigger hotel casinos I have been in, and just recently at the Bellagio, have security personnel at the elevators to screen the people going to their rooms. How many non-gambling hotels have video surveillance in the hallways and elevators to the guest floors and rooms? I would say most do not.

Also, as Expertmagician mentioned, not all the guests may want video surveillance in the hallways or in less public areas. What's next, video surveillance in the rest rooms.

I'm sure customers would appreciate to feel safe in every area of a casino.

It's one thing to guaranty the integrity of the game, but if the guy gets robbed or raped once he leaves the table... I wouldn't be it's gonna be a good publicity for the casino!

I strongly hope such problems are rare.

Cameras, live security, etc really don't do very much in terms of offering protection to casino patrons, casino employees, or innocent passersby.

A quick internet search will highlight a great many murders and assaults committed in and around Las Vegas and Nevada gambling properties.

The only real personal security one might enjoy are the steps one undertakes of their own volition to ensure their individual safety - something that is ultimately true of personal safety anywhere in the world, Las Vegas gambling properties included.

As Cag noted, all the hyped surveillance personal and equipment in Nevada properties exists solely to protect the gambling operation - not to protect those who gamble ... which is not to say that the abundance of equipment and personnel don't occasionally secure an individuals safety - they do ... but that's certainly not something a Las Vegas visitor can count on.

Expecting security cameras in the hallways to keep guests safe is as useless as expecting criminals to obey gunlaws. It isn't going to happen.

In our saloon we have many cameras, which are helpful in running the place but we only have one on the door at the game. We don't think it is a good idea to have records in a private game.

@tommy

Can you detail a bit more? Why do you think it's not a good idea?

We need to be able to say such without there being any hard evidence to the contrary. We have no real need for them anyway.
