Despite general opinion, I believe there is a potential for great wonder in performing for an audience that knows you personally.
The common ideas in what I have read include these spectators unwillingness to suspend their disbelief, their lack of focus in presentation, and their disregard of character. These (though only a sample) thoughts seem very understandable, but I would like to point out that the issue may not be ones relation with the person and the liberties they take during a performance. I believe these performers simply lack an audience that truly wants to be entertained. These audience types will at times even heckle these poor people, and have discouraged genuine effort in providing a good show. I have often heard that many performers will field test their ideas on their spouse, but I avoid this. The reason is everything I prepare is for her eyes ultimately. I have avoided showing her anything since I learned who Stebbins was. We have an agreement. I will not show her anything until I believe it is the best I can do. She probably won't see anything for 10 years (maybe 20.) Though her suspension of disbelief is non existant, I would like to reference an interview where Prof BC noted the importance theatrical elements play when considering your place in a performance. I will not state the exact ideas here (if interested go listen to it if you haven't,) but the point is I am thinking that letting her in on the fact that I am a show can be good. She has an appreciation for expression that I can use as a substitution of her belief in my character. Thus, the theatrics are valued as the brushes of a painters hand. I am also allowed the privilege of going into the ideas that interest us. Some of the thoughts we entertain may be unfamiliar with the groups of people our products are usually developed with the intention of entertaining. I can manipulate the lighting in a room and feature spooky posters in my house, and not be at the mercy of an awkward venue. This allows many privileges regarding methods also, but that is more a topic of one spectator shows. I am simply stating the value of such a situation. So, my question is "has there been study into this form of entertainment, and if so, would you kindly point me in the direction?" Assuming there hasn't, I would welcome any opinions regarding the development or avoidance of such a situation. I think a forum that covered this information would be valuable to many more than myself. I thank you for your time. My first contribution would be the con that some effects are priced above the budget of those who are assumed to be "merely curious." This makes the plunge into purchase much deeper when a single spectator is being considered for. On the plus, one can refine themself and know that they will not be unappreciated in their effort (though merit should hold more importance.) Any contributions would be greatly appreciated. I can see opportunities with effects and methods that only work in this situation, and I plan to study them. |
