Greetings from the South of India.
I have been lurking here for quite some time now and decided it was time to come out of the shadows. Have been studying magic on and off for the past 10-11 years, with my interest & engagement both waxing and waning periodically owing to, primarily, educational obligations but more recently professional ones too. A chance performance for a few strangers a couple of months ago - who were vocal about their amazement and admiration - revived my long-standing interest in magic. In the process I also discovered my old magic books, props and notebooks with a number of ideas I would scribble down in a manic fashion (alas, bad handwriting and haphazard scribbles have rendered many as indecipherable to the author as Egyptian hieroglyphics!). My primary interest in magic right from the start was mentalism & card magic and I have returned to them with vigour. I am also interested in the history of magic, magic theory and hope to do work at some point in my life that applies a non-Western lens to Indian magic and magicians. As an atheist & a rationalist, I believe my interest in magic and its cognitive & cultural aspects is but a natural extension. I have been devoting a fair amount of time on magic recently and am also considering becoming a part-time 'pro' performer but regardless of whether that materializes or not (and I may just consult the Café on that!), I would like to learn from, engage with and contribute to the magic community going ahead - be that in an academic shape, in the form of effects, props or just being an 'educated' amateur. Too often I have let the capital of my passion whither away simply out of trepidation. I'm only 24, so I believe I have time on my side to do my bit for magic. Thanks for this wonderful platform. Hope to see you around.

Welcome Prof. Azrar,
I think I was older than 24 when I started in Magic for the first time, so you are way ahead of me at that age. I'm often struck by the chance encounters that re-launch returning Magicians. Just small happenings with such fun consequences. Welcome back to Magic. -Mary Mowder |
