.... when you see, ".... It went straight into my act!" do you think it really did?
I mean, don't most of us, especially the pros, have a carefully crafted "act" that rarely gets changed in long periods of time? I see this a lot, especially from real pros, in testimonials. I cant believe that they add that much stuff into their existing act. How big does their act get? Do they remove and replace or just add. Sorry, but I see this more and more every day. Why not just say, "wow this is great. It gets my highest recommendation. Like it a lot." This would be a little more believable. And I want to believe. J |

"Act" is magician code for "bookshelf".

That phrase has deterred me from many purchases, actually. Kind of like, "Fits any performer!" - If it's so bland it fits everyone, it must be pretty bad.

I think at least 50% who say 'working repertoire' don't have one at all...especially some of the constant 'reviewers'...
Also, not many reviewers go beyond "I recommend this" - never giving reasons as to why they recommend it, if they've performed it and so on... Its ok chipping in with just a couple of lines on something that is new, but if you want me to listen, please review it properly...

Another variation of this phrase:
It completely changed my show. Even if it's only one trick or one routine. |

I think that anyone who has been doing this for awhile completely discounts certain statements in reviews. In fact, I do discount certain reviewers, certain opinions, certain descriptions of effects. If you have been doing this awhile, it becomes second nature. If you are new, you can read others posts about such issues until they are completely taken down.

For a change something honest: since 2012 I have changed ONE routine in my full evening show which is around two hours... The rest of the time I was polishing and improving existing routines; once in a while I got inspired by a new routine, inspired to rethink little details of my existing performance. Only that is worth it to study all the time, you are never ready or perfect, BUT.... Jan

I may be developing a few new ideas for inclusion in my main show (50:50 Fantasia is one), but in order to be put into the stage show it has to stronger, better or more suited to the act. It's a long process. Initial scripting and generally getting to know the prop or routine perfectly, breaking it in doing close up and then Parlour. If I still love it after all that I may start eyeing it for a position in the main show. But it's been a number of years since I changed the stage show...other than to polish, as Jan suggested. I can't imagine putting anything even into a walkabout set until it's as perfect as I can make it...and there's no way that's happening in an afternoon. David

I'm at that point where I have not got my act where I want it so there are things that genuinely do go straight into my act. 10,000 decimals of PI being a case in point and Jan Forsters mem deck routine being another. Well straight in is a misnomer because I have to work out my scripting/blocking etc so it can take weeks or even months for something to go "straight into my show". However in both cases I was looking for something of that nature for that slot. I looked at 10,000 decimals of PI and Babel for the memory dem and they were both a perfect fit with PI being the preferred choice because some nice opportunities for humour.
As far as Jans effect I bought insight for a particular slot requiring 3 people and test conditions and when I saw Jans lecture I loved the routine and it perfectly fits the spot that insight was to fill and whilst it isn't quite as hands off as insight it's extremely close. Not only are there no electronics to fail with Jan's version but I would actually enjoy performing it more because I'm doing the work. So it went "straight into the act" from the point of I know where it fits, now I need to figure out how to make it my own before it goes "live". Once my act is where I want it changes will be extremely rare, my magic act hardly changed over 30 years and those updates tended to be tiny changes to keep it topical. The biggest change was when the smoking ban came in. Whilst it is still legal to smoke inside as part of a theatrical performance, most of the venues I performed in such as banqueting halls etc would not be aware of this so I dropped the cigarette material. However when it comes to walk around close up performances I think it is a lot easier to drop things in to your working repertoire. Mark |
