My number one dove; David Copperfield, is extremely quiet. I remember growing up with my fathers birds from his show being noisy. I have only heard one "luagh" and a couple attempts to "coo"...Is he depressed or what? Maybe little David Copperfield feels that his calling was in the mime business...

ITs normal for female dove not to coo. Its the male dove that coo and makes all that noise you remember. |

Female doves coo as well just not as much. Are you sure your bird is a David and not a Davina? I have a fool proof method of sexing my birds. If I name them as a male, they almost always turn out to be female and vice versa. It's not a problem if they are quiet. I have 21 birds and some of them hardly ever make a sound. The only thing I'd be concerned with is that if your bird was always vocal and all of a sudden stopped. That might indicate it just isn't feeling well. They're just like people sometimes.

Birds often go through phases. Sometimes they are very chatty and sometimes they are not. Also maybe your bird is learning how to coo 'laugh' etc. They often struggle with it when they are young and therefore can be quite quiet or maybe it is just the personality of your bird, every one is different, just be thankful you have got a quiet one though, they can get really noisy like you said. If you are still unsure take them to the vet, like Dave said he/she may not be feeling well.

Lucy and I keep about a hundred white doves on hand for magic. Most don't make a lot of noise. As a group, the noise level seems to be related to the length of daylight. Long days and short nights are the noisy ones. I would not be concerned about a mute dove. I've seen them raise fine families. Instead I would look for food and water consumption, feathers and general appearance. If it is an indoor bird, it may not get enough sleep to be very noisy. Give it more dark time.
Don't get your feelings hurt, but remember, to a dove looking for another dove, humans are pretty ugly. Why coo at something that is no prospect? Even a bird has pride! (I wonder if there is a term "Dove ugly"?) Good Luck! Bob |

If you think your bird is ill, look at his eyes. Are they large, watery, glassey? Does he spend all day on the bottom of the cage? How is his breathing?
Dove can get colds very easily from drafts. Are you giving them proper grit? Do you give them vitamins regularly? Chopped up hard boiled egg? Broken up egg shell into small pieces as grit with vitamins. Caster oil with help them poop if he is plugged up. Get a anti-biactic (SP) from the pet store for birds. Follow the directions, you will probably have to give them twice the amount as the instructions are usually for small birds. |
