Ahh-- the cigarette is a 130mm. Almost missed it.
(Actually Simon spits a lot of tea-- a Llamaesque Lovellian tradition. It works even better when he is actually sipping it.) |

Magicians that cheat at the card table… It can and has happened in this world. I know quite a few magicians that have the skill it takes to cheat at the card table. One of them or more are members of this group.
I know a person that was in the military and as people in the military do they would play cards. For a gag this person would deal a royal flush the ultimate hand in poker and deal it to one of the new guys that was playing cards and just arrived at the base… This was a gag they would pull on all the new guys that were transferred to that base for a good laugh. Anyone that has that ability and can play cards can do the same thing. Then there is the famous Marlo story that was on his first video about a guy that wanted to cheat and he got Eddie Fields and Ed into a game at a Lions club. After some gags by Eddie Fields Marlo had the punch work on the cards and they ended the night about $15.00 ahead after several hours of playing cards. I have also heard this story directly from Marlo and I see no reason not to believe that it is not true. As a magician and as entertainer I want to make it look like I can really cheat at the card table. Even though I have not played cards in many years. One of the best moves to hit the DVD’s lately is on the DVD that Jimmy Cards Molinari just produced. It has his methods of stacking and culling on this DVD. This is important work for the card shark magicians as culling is a part of card magic that has not been fully explained much. With this cull stack you can pick up any deck of cards and cull stack them such as to run up a hand for four aces to land in the fifth hand of poker. Bring the four aces to the top of the deck or any four of a kind or any cards for a set up for another card effect. When you are performing and someone says “I wouldn’t play cards with him!” You can have the deck shuffled, take the deck back and run up a hand and deal them out giving you the winning hand… Anytime with any deck. I have used this cull stack for years (Jimmy showed it to me years ago) and it is one of the backbones of my card work. And it is on Jimmy Cards Molinari’s new DVD,,, I hope you found this interesting! Glenn Bishop http://www.mrhypnotist.org

Thanks for the comments - certainly culling is very important and is, to me, one of my most powerful tools (see The Bucket Cull in Son of Simon Says). Of course no cheat would ever need four of a kind one or two cards can sway a game.
The main point is that it's not the skill required so much as the larceny required! |

I think your right about card sharking Simon about taking more nerve or larceny than skill… About 1980...
I was living in Chicago and was performing close up walk around at a Christmas party in a VFW hall. There were two magicians booked besides me and we were doing close up magic at the tables. I did a short expo on card shark methods and an older gentleman in his late 60’s or early 70’s asked to see my deck. Then he shuffled the deck on the table and asked me how many poker hands? I said 7 hands and he shuffled the deck a few more times. He asked me to cut the deck and I did… Then he dealt out 7 hands and had three aces in the 7th hand. I asked him to do that again and I went off to get one of my friend magicians that was booked so he could watch (Two magicians have a better chance of spoting his methods) and when we got back to the table with my friend he was gone… Another time I was doing close up magic at the State street mall downtown Chicago. In those days I did the shell game as a closer and on the second day of the booking an older black-well-dressed gentleman came up to me and showed me a new move with the shells that I had never seen before at the time. I thought he was a magician… He watched a few more shows and then told me he was a gentleman that cheats at cards and asked me if I would be interested in working a salt and pepper team with him. He said your perfect because I had a baby face and he could teach me what I needed to know. I was interested in what he had to say so I agreed to meet him for lunch so we could talk the next day. We met I did some stuff for him (a poker hand run up stacking four of a kind) and he showed me a few ideas… But he then told me that a player (as he called himself) would never even try to learn to stack more than three of a kind. Three of a kind and more often two of a kind was more than enough to “get the money”… He also said that I do my moves to flashy or better put… To much like a person doing a show… A hard habit to break… So we swapped a few moves and he was off and I never saw him again as well. We have not met yet Simon but I have met Todd Robbins on line and he did a big favor for me. He let me in on the bed of nails stunt. And I use it effectively for publicity with my hypnosis show. Todd is also a great friend of Marshall Brodien who has also been a lot of help to me with my hypnosis show… And used to be my boss before my Dad got his magic store from him at Old Chicago. It is nice to meet you in this group and I hope to meet you at a convention sometime. Glenn Bishop http://www.mrhypnotist.org
