X-treem: I love my girlfriend, too! Ha...I couldn't resist. I agree that Relient K is an excellent group.
However, I'm almost positive that Relient K didn't write the song (Pardon me, I'm a BigIdea enthusiast). Mike Nawrocki reported that the idea for the song came from a singing group he toured with that would always sing "...and we've never been to Boston in the fall." I think Relient K may have done a remix, though (see the Jonah DVD). Magic-wise, doing a routine in the Larryboy costume (complete with plunger) would be pretty cool. Axtell has a Khalil puppet still, though. I also think that the Lyle the Viking story could be fairly visual. |

I know this is an older thread that Steve popped back to the top, but I am curious as to why no one has commented about the fact that Veggie Tales and the characters are licensed, copywrited and/or trademarked.
Is it not both unethical and illegal to make and perform magic tricks and balloon animals of licensed/trademarked characters, without permission? Shouldn't we, as Christians, and entertainers, hold to the highest moral code on this? (Not to be more controversal...) I've seen a few different threads on Harry Potter magic shows (in the little darlings section, and on other forums), but I thought a performer runs the risk of being sued for the use of Potter and themes for their own profit. After all, it is a licensed, copywrited and/or trademarked franchise, right? Even if you think this may be different, has anyone written to Big Idea (creators of Veggie Tales) to ask and receive permission before including anything of theirs in your show? Here's an article at Balloon Headquarters on using Disney-type balloons you might like to read, and think about: Copyrights, Trademarks, and Balloon Art. However, I think we, as believers, should not just do the right thing because we are afraid of being sued. It should be done because IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. I'd just prefer to see Christians think and act in a way that won't damage their witness. - Donald.

Good point gr8.
I haven't got to see a lot of veggie tales tapes. I have to date seen 3 of them since I no longer have little kids. I can tell you that the 2nd graders in my sunday school class really love them.

Sunday Morning Values, Saturday Morning Fun..
I would be more concerned with Disney sueing me than Big Ideas. With the Christian approach behind the company, I'm sure they look at it as free advertisement or at least a solid endorsement. I make a Bob or Larry balloons whenever kids request them. I also buy every Veggie Tales product I can get my hands on for my daughter. I fully support the Big Ideas company and I'm sure they would support me and my ministry. But I will take the time to contact the company and see if they have a problem with it. I avoid Harry Potter anything as it goes against everything I stand for. Disney on the other hand has trouble making a movie with a traditional family unit (i.e. two parents) and routinely fail to uphold the values I stand for.

Be careful about that . Big Idea is not owned by Christians anymore.
That doesn't make them automatically bad or anything , I'm just pointing out that the ownership of the company has changed from overtly Christian-based to a secular entertainment company. The original company went bankrupt and they were purchased by Classic Media , which owns and licenses various "family" types of shows and cartoons . The good thing is that Classic Media has basically left Big Idea alone, not messing around with a good thing. The big change is that none of the animation production is done at Big Idea's Chicago-based studio anymore , but is off-shored to foreign countries where the animation labor is cheaper . I also heard that Big Idea is moving their offices to Franklin , TN soon . Interestingly , Classic Media has not mentioned the acquisition of Big Idea on their web site yet . (Maybe that means the deal is not yet final ? Or maybe they worked out an arrangement that doesn't mention the connection ? Big Idea's web site doesn't mention it either , but then again Big Idea's web site doesn't let on that they laid-off 200 people last year either or that they are down to a handful of development artists and a small story team. ) http://www.christiantimes.com/Articles/A......_04.html http://www.classicmedia.tv/ Always best to get permission to use licensed characters , whether from a "Christian" company or otherwise . Don't assume that a company won't go after you with a "cease and desist " if they perceive you as infringing on their copyrighted characters. |

They're good folks at Big Idea , but they may have to wait for clearance from Classic Media before they could officially say : "yes, use the characters for your performances, no problem. " |
