I am better known for breaking things rather than fixing/ making them (who else can claim that they bought a $85 antique lock and destroyed it beyond repair in 20 min. after a theory did not work out?)
I wanted to test Steve Santini's claims in Interchange as, to be honest, some sounded a little crazy (especially key #4 for those who buy the booklet) but I did not want to use any fancy schmancy equipment to make the Interchange keys as many of you do not have a lot of equipment or knowledge that one would assume they'd need to make these work. I had one of each needed key already but remembering the lock fiasco I spent about 3 days buying 3-4 back ups of each key in case making one failed. I sat down in my basement with noting more than a small (the name was "stared" out it is a common file name starting with a "B") file and set to work making 4 of the 7 keys. In 45 min. not only were all 4 keys done, with no mistakes, each worked exactly as claimed AND the hand drawen pictures were all that I used for the basis of my work. I was somewhat leary at first since I know that 1/100 of a mm. can mean the difference between a functional key and a lump of junk, but that did not matter with Interchange EVERYTHING worked exactly, again I refer all who buy it to key #4. Next weekend I make the rest of the keys in the booklet, I will have each key at Indy along with some of the cuffs they interchange with. In making my keys I came across a FEW points of frustration that a beginner MAY run across that could make someone claim that the booklet and keys do not work, so with Steve's permission I will be writting a very short booklet Interchange for Beginners which will walk you through troubleshooting any of the problems I encountered and how to overcome them. I will tell you exactly what file and why I chose the file I worked with also one key calls for a single cut with a Dremel tool for those of you who do not have one I will walk you through the alternative I used (remember I did not want to use "fancy tools" so I figured out another way) and round it out with a sort of Interchange I came up with 6 months ago, that is fun to share. At Indy the booklet will be free if you pick up Steve's Interchange and, depending on printing cost, it will remain free to those who buy Steve's booklet, if need be in the future there may be a VERY nominal printing fee, we'll see. I'll let you know how the other keys turn out as I make them. X

Shawn, this all sounds great stuff especially a free book for beginners but what is 'interchange' and what are you making keys for? are these handcuff keys or lock keys? or can I make a spare key to my house?
Can you tell us more about this new book or two. Chris |

Hello Cat,
Interchange I posted earlier on Interchange and it can be found by follwing my link. Interchange as per the introduction by Steve Santini is the ability to (paraphrase) change a key so that it opens more than the lock it was designed for. Though Interchange is a rare occurance when it come to house keys with handcuff keys it is a different story. Santini's Interchange is based soley on handcuff keys and though some of the keys are a little hard to find there are two interchange keys which can be made with a standard S&W 104 key and a Hiatt "Universal" key which will allow you to open NUMEROUS older and modern day restraints. My booklet is based on the same thing, I am just walking people through some problems that Steve did not encounter when he made his keys (each key being slightly different) but that I ran into while making mine, since it was easy for me to know what was wrong I was quickly able to make a slight variation to the key that others may not see when they try to make theirs. The interchange that I add into my manuscript does not involve a handcuff key yet it will open 2 different restraints. I hope this helps if not please let me know. Shawn

Count me in. I have always had a strong interest in this sort of thinking. There are very few EAs out there that have a 'multi-use' methodology and far fewer that are willing to break these secrets, even to the EA community they are part of.
This stuff is pure gold. I wonder if the purchasers should even be pre-qualified for this high of a level of material?

Hum, King that is a tough one, I knew little about the "art" of interchange (let alone a meaning) before reading it.
Thus I was not pre-qualified unless my charming good looks pre-qualify me X

Just seems like too good of information. I have played with some different ideas, but without years of experience and a decent sized collection, well I didn't get anywhere with them. Made a lot of junk and broke some good stuff I had to replace. None of it turned out workable, and none got close to safe, or usable.
Its nice to have sombody walk you through these kind of things. I mean Reeaaly nice.
