Hello everyone!
I've been lurking for awhile and finally decided to make an account. I'm pretty new, only got into magic in mid 2015 after watching the video of the Irish guy performing 673 King Street for his friends in a pub. I just HAD to know how it was done, so I started doing a bit of research. After learning a few f____ ______e techniques and memorizing the story, I realized that if I could do this much, I could do more, so I sought it out. I started with a couple of Youtube channels, but soon learned of some of the sites marketed toward magicians. After a bit more time, I discovered that books could teach me far more for my money than any instant download could, so I delved into them. I first picked up some that came highly recommended: The Royal Road to Card Magic, The Expert at the Card Table and Modern Coin Magic. A bit later I chanced upon a copy of Mark Wilson's book at a used book store and recognized the name, so I picked it up. I also grabbed Joshua Jay's course at the same time, which is a fine read but not nearly as awesome as Mark's. Since then I've started on the Tarbell series (only picked up the first volume so far) as well as a few other choice works like The Magic of Michael Ammar (largely for the cups and balls segment) and Jim Ravel's Theatrical Pickpocketing (which sadly I haven't had much practice with, although small success in items like a pack of cigarettes, a pen, things like that). My personal favorite is a well-executed cups and balls routine. I don't perform professionally, however I would likely take the chance if given it. I plan on attending next month's SAM meeting which was recommended to me by local magician Wes Iseli (shout out to you if you're a member here Wes!) Anyway I just wanted to say thanks again for giving me somewhere to come and peruse advice from people who are far more experienced than me. I look forward to finally participating in discussions. |

Welcome Brandon. Can't go wrong with books. A lot of material in the classics. Looks like you are off to a good start and having a good mentor is a plus. Enjoy the journey!

Welcome Brandon G,
One of the advantages here is you can not only get advice from those with more experience but make contact with some Magicians with a similar level of experience. You've got some great reference materials. Keep a record of your progress to look back on later. -Mary Mowder |

Thanks, one thing I'm trying to do is decide on a few effects to focus on to create a few routines.
