Before I go on, yes , I reread what I wrote and yes it's effusive but it's how I really felt when I wrote it.
So: I can remember experiencing my first magic trick at 8 years old. I remember see my first "really good magic show" at 19. About 40 years later I spent several delightful years mentoring my Granddaughters in the Magical Arts. Of course I remember other things in-between. But these are standout markers in my " magical life" Last night I discovered another marker. Last night I attended my second "really good magic show" . An “Evening of Magic presented by the Wagster's”, stars a couple who are truly dedicated to the Art of Magic, husband and wife Brandon and Hannah Wagster. Their love for each other and for magic is telling in all they do. They share equal billing as “The Wagster's”, giving each of them credit for the skill, knowledge, training and talent that goes into a show of this caliber. The magic was classic, with color changing silks, boxes with swords thrust through them and handfuls of playing cards appearing out of nowhere. The effects, illusions and feats were presented with perfect timing, movement and expert skill. The sets design and lighting were impeccable. The musical selections were spot on and perfectly matched to each act. I was nearly jubilant over the use of Jerry Anderson's “Typewriter” instrumental as accompaniment for the Newspaper tear segment. The cups and balls presentation could be the best choreographed and staged version I have ever witnessed. Brevity, pacing and simplicity of motion held my attention. I neither wanted nor needed to take advantage of the big screen video that was available. The staging made what is usually called a “close-up” effect easy to follow from even the most remote seating. Even the maudlin magic show prerequisite of a “grandpa story” seemed true, earnest and heartfelt In my years reviewing magic shows as a “magic insider” this is my first where I can't offer a constructive criticism. With the Calvin Gilmore Auditorium at close to capacity, I'm confident that many in the audience were experiencing their very first “live” magic show. I'm so happy that this was the show they saw. I am hopeful and confidant that this show will return. I highly recommend it for both adult and child. Your experiences could be magical too. The Wagsters will surely have their own theater in Myrtle Beach before you know it!
