I saw Split this evening. I thought it was a great movie. Be sure to watch to the end. And see it soon, to avoid having it spoiled for you by accident.
Anyone reading further in this thread does so at their own risk.

In case you're curious about how far the notion of "split" has been taken in recent stories - meet Susan in Peter Watt's novel Blindsight.
Quote:
Imagining the topology of the Gang's coexisting souls, I could see why Sascha embraced the mythology. I could see why Susan let her. After all, there was nothing implausible about the concept; the Gang's very existence proved that much. And when you've been peeled off from a pre-existing entity, sculpted from nonexistence straight into adulthood—a mere fragment of personhood, without even a full-time body to call your own—you can be forgiven a certain amount of anger. Sure you're all equal, all in it together. Sure, no persona is better than any other. Susan's still the only one with a surname. and Quote:
Inevitably, it was Science that turned them all into road kill; MPD was a half-forgotten fad even before the advent of synaptic rewiring. But alter was a word from that time, and its resonance had persisted. Among those who remembered the tale, alter was codespeak for betrayal and human sacrifice. Alter meant cannon fodder. from here: http://www.rifters.com/real/Blindsight.htm

I mean it seemed to try to combine a psychological thriller like Hitchcock and scifi and it mashed up unsuccessful for me. It just went "too far" for me in that realm. Not by much, but it was strange. I will say I seem to be in the minority in this by the way. It seems to have pretty good reviews.

For me, it was the ending that really made the movie. Because I'm a big fan of that other thing (I mean the movie, not the actor).
I'm a little surprised you didn't like 'Split' more, given it is essentially a de facto comic-book origin style movie.

I guess I went in expecting something different and that probably didn't help.
I think it was painfully obvious I will get an opportunity to enjoy another movie in this realm. It was a de facto comic origin, I just thought it was done poorly is the problem. To me that aspect of it was lazy and ham handed. In reality had that aspect been removed I probably would have enjoyed the movie more. Again probably putting me in the minority.

I haven't seen it. I'm going to try and avoid spoilers from those who have. (Hats off to the people on this thread who have talked around the plot points.
Of the storylines that handle "Disassociative Identity Disorder" (DID), I really enjoyed a Manga (Japanese comic) called "Othello" which dealt with a talented songwriter named Yaya who is so harassed, she develops a much more aggressive personality named Nana. The story involves Yaya getting into situations either on her own or through bullying that bring out the alternate personalty and the competition between the two personalities for dominance. It was a light weight take on the problem, (real DID requires massive amounts of abuse, not the bullying here that triggers the switch) but it was fascinating to watch both the character trying to deal with the two parts of her personality and the boyfriend who loves Yaya, but is fascinated by the aggressive Nana. http://mangafox.me/manga/othello_shoujo/

@Ed, check out Watts story Blindsight. The question of "who gets to be me" is nontrivial.

As I understand from my reading on the subject (not extensive, I assure you) the answer is; neither (or none, if there are more than two) "gets to be me." Generally, the separate personalities have to be "integrated" and the new personality carries aspects of all the others.

Ed, the link to the work was posted above. It's right there courtesy of the author. He went after the notion of self/identity as we understand it with his characters being imperfect in ways we use to define self.

If you liked Split, especially the ending, how did you like Glass?
