What? I thought this was going to be a prequel, giving us more information on the character of The Comedian, the sleazy superhero who gets killed at the beginning of "The Watchman."

I hate listening to all film critics but that was fascinating and brilliant. Thank you.

Thanks, tommy.
Devious, sorry the review wasn't to your liking. I'm relatively new to radio, so if you could give any specific constructive criticism, I'm certainly open to hearing it. BTW the film opens Feb 3rd nationally, so you can make up your own minds up about it.

Jack, I like to consider you as someone that I have a deep amount of respect for. Please accept my apologies for me coming across as harsh without constructive comments.
I will listen to it again soon. L'Chaim! |

Not to pick on Landmark, but is it possible that Tommy liked the review specifically because Devious didn't?

Anything which exists is possible.
Things that we find fascinating and brilliant are not necessarily that which we like anyhow.

I listened again to Jack's review. The film is about a comedian. I was expecting a light hearted aproach to the review. A joke or a line from the film as an example of the humor and not the sterile comments from having seen De Niros prior work.
Ed Rhodes...Tommy and I have mutual respect and we do not throw darts at one another to my best recollection. |

AS someone that was in radio and television for 25 years, owned and managed a radio station and hired and trained many radio personalities, news anchors and of course live entertainers for 30 years, I tend to agree with the thoughts of Devious. This was a recording of a printed review read live. This is part of the problem with the difference between podcasts and true radio today. Radio is a combination of performing, entertaining, announcing and informing. The delivery from the host or "personality" is lacking...well personality. To many beginning this is often not understood, over-looked or missed completely. They tend to focus on their writing and structure rather than delivery and presentation which is what radio should be about. As Devious said, at some point the tone overshadowed and even distracted from the message. I don't say this to criticize Landmark, but rather to agree with Devious' thoughts and go a bit deeper as to why. It could also help Landmark as a personality or "radio entertainer." Again, there is much of this going on today with hosts, especially podcast hosts, since now virtually anyone thinks they can do it. Many hosts are terrible, no personality, no engagement, and expect their content or guest to provide the goods. Since most guests today are not properly media-ready or skilled, it becomes the blind leading the blind, the unskilled leading and counting on the unskilled. Also just for the record, the notion that just because someone is a good live performer (magician, mentalist, hypnotist, comedian, etc.) in no way makes then a good radio or podcast personality. Same for former athletes attempting to make it in the broadcast booth. I discuss much of this in my book Press & Media For Entertainers. Thanks for the review, I hope to see this movie later this week in my travels. |

Thanks for the helpful comments, Mindpro. I've done lots of live theater and performing, but I'm still learning my way around radio.

When we read the chapter “Speed in Presentation” in “Our Magic” we see that to satisfy an audience one needs to balance the performance with equal proportions of magic and entertainment. All work and no play make Jack a dull boy. It the same principle and applies all things. When they say it is too dry they mean the balance is wrong, with it too many facts and not enough entertainment. As a teacher, you know that the lessons need to be fun as well as informative. “Speed in Presentation” explains the idea better than I can. The reason I hate listening to all film critics is they are all too dry. The same I think could be said of art experts and the like. They are informative but not much fun.

I agree with you, tommy. I'll keep it in mind for next time.
So has anyone seen the film yet? If so, what did you think?
