Hello, all!
I spent a lot of time performing magic when I was a kid and a young teen. I spent a lot of time at Al's Magic Shop in Washington, DC, where I grew up. I joined IBM and I spent a summer at Tannen's magic camp. I mostly did close up for my friends at school, although I sometimes performed for neighborhood birthday parties. Then I drifted away from magic for many years. I went to college... Moved to London... And then I had kids, and they eventually got old enough to enjoy seeing the few tricks I remembered. So, mostly in an effort to have new things to show them, I dived back into the field. At age 44, I finally learned a decent Elmsley count (which had always eluded me as a teenager) and I'm hard at work perfecting a good double lift. Also, I have a children's book coming out later this year, and I'll be visiting schools to promote it. I'm starting to think about how I can work magic into my school presentations, too. I only wish I had taken better care of all my old Tenyo magic tricks. Who knew they'd be collector's items? |

Welcome jacobsw,
Congratulations on your book. You are not the first Magician here who credits their Kids for bringing them back to Magic. When I perform for adults I am often moved by the remembrances of Magic that people have of a Parent, Grandparent or Uncle who performed for them as Kids. No kidding, there are often tears in their eyes. Magic has a strong effect when performed by a Family member. -Mary Mowder |

Thanks Mary! And I know what you mean about magic by family members. My two favorite magical memories from childhood are seeing Harry Blackstone, Jr, perform his stage show with all his expensive and dazzling equipment... and seeing my grandfather do a simple trick with a balled up napkin. To an objective observer, of course the Blackstone show would have been more impressive -- but on an emotional level, I will always remember my grandfather's trick more fondly.
