Hi All: The sidebar/sidetrack first: Last Sunday, I decided to do a very simple Gospel illustration in kids Sunday School. I used a large 50 foot plastic rainbow/many colors mouth coil streamer (from Andy Amyx Productions) purchased from Penguin Magic. These are terrific coils, very long, and they don't tear or rip. A kid can yank on them and they will not break, making for a very long production that can go all the way to the back of the classroom and then some. (Just have to let it hang a little first so it looks better rather than pulled straight like a rope). So all you need is one of these mouth coils hidden in a little box along with a little piece of white tissue paper with the words "mercy", "grace" and "peace" written on it with a marker.
To start the illustration, I called up three kids: One read of a large poster card (you can get these in packs of 5 at Dollar Tree) Jude 1:2: "May God give you MORE and MORE mercy, peace, and love. I had the child read it twice, and talked how God wishes us to not just have a little mercy, or just some peace once in awhile, or feel loved only slightly, but more and more each day, the rest of our lives (you can Google this verse to find more on it). I had another child read twice loudly 2 Peter 1:2: "May God give you MORE and MORE grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord." After the two readers sat down, I gave to the last child a tissue paper showing the words "Mercy, Peace and Love" on it (while finger palming in my right lower fingers the mouth coil when I picked up the tissue). I then asked the kids if they saw a torn and restored paper trick before. I then asked the child to rip the paper three times, complimenting him on each tear, then roll it into a small ball. He then gives the ball to me and I push it into my fist (right behind the concealed mouth coil). I then asked/inquired to see if the paper had been simply restored- or will it grow MORE and MORE into an unbelievable amount of new mercy and peace and love! I then slowly pulled out the streamer- with the child walking it to the back of the room (and at the end simply wadding the torn pieces into the final streamer end before I collected the streamer back). The kids were delighted- they just could not believe all that came out of my closed fist- really a great fun reaction. Then we gathered it all up at the end back where I was and I thanked my helper. Just a very simple visual way to enforce a Biblical truth using a simple mouth coil. Another sidebar: This routine could be greatly expanded into a wonderful full out feature effect for children or adults. See Robert Baxt's excellent DVD "World's Funniest Mouthcoil Routine" available from Penguin Magic or from Robert's web site directly. Robert uses I believe (not sure)the cresey.com 25 foot rainbow paper mouthcoils (also available from Penguin and many other dealers). I personally don't like putting a mouth coil in my mouth for any length of time, I have too much of a gag reflex I guess. But Robert Baxt's mouth coil routine is really fantastic (like all his stuff) and you could adopt it to the above Gospel message if you wanted to if need be. Baxt has lots of new additions and jokes/banter for use with a mouth coil. The price of the Baxt DVD is worth it just to see him interacting with his different aged volunteers. He makes the great point that many professional performers make is that the fun/enjoyment of the audience is having is more important for most audiences usually than the fine magical expertise/unseen knuckle busting of the performer. Good advice. |

What a great idea for a routine using a simple item like a mouthcoil.
I'm adding this idea to my files for future use! |

Thanks Jamie, I appreciate your kind words. The above is a true Gospel trick experience, "kid tested", for at at least once before a live children's audience at Lighthouse Community Church.
Since I am currently doing "Gospel magic" for the same 50+ plus kids over and over and over 40+ times a year and up to 6 years in a-row (before the kids "graduate" out into another 5th+ grade "teen" area outside of our 4th grade and under children's wing)- I am always working on "new stuff"/Gospel illustrations as the kids will remember magic tricks even from years ago if I repeat them. So even though I do repeat things from time to time, I try to make it different each week if at all possible. If its okay, I will continue to post some ideas- I have a table laid out of new effects in my basement I hope to use over the next two months- all purchased from a variety of well known dealers. Folks/readers/posters here on The Café' can get the tricks too if they find any interest in them for use in their own programs or kids Sunday Schools... Or better yet, post their own ideas/additions/changes to the routines posted they think would work well also. Fired Up! Barry Mitchell is right, the "creativity" of being a Gospel or kids magician is what keeps it personally engaging for the performer and and interesting for the audience. The Netflix documentary program (over a four year time period) on the four very different magicians (energetic Vegas style, crazy good card closeup, tv show and bar gig, older corporate adult type) stressed how once the wanting to change and creativity is gone, then the fun and enjoyment of being a magician is dimmed in most instances. This is another blatant example of an OT post- Jon Armstrong in the above Netflix program was captivating... Kinda sad it did not end well recently for one of the performers featured. Another OT: My next post (what I am working on for one of next month's Sunday Schools) is a Gospel Illustration using Ickle Pickle's "Butterfinger, Kit Kat & M&M's" trick combined with "Brown E's" by Gosh. Fun stuff |

Magic Bus, I don't know who you are, but I'm grateful to you for your kind words about my mouth coil DVD! For anyone else reading this it's available from my website with a bonus that you won't get from any other dealer. But don't take my word for it. see what these two guys in the U.K. who I have never met had to say about it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoANRv9PHcA&t=4s

Everything I've purchased from Robert Baxt the last few years has been great!
I have the mouth coil DVD and love the routine ideas -- I use some of the ideas in my own programs. |

I have the Baxt DVD also- very well done with some neat "moves" I never would have thought of for sure.
Maybe someone can help me with this. Is this normal or crazy? I last used a mouth coil coming out of a hidden fist palm last year. The kids seemed to like it, especially as I twirled around my finger pulling the colorful coil out of my closed fist. Why in the world do only that? Not nearly as good or funny or unexpected as coming out of the magician's mouth! Just ask PJ Weber who has used a mouth coil for decades -and he usually then produces a live dove out of the pile of tissue at the end of the routine. It is a Great Trick that packs small- impresses big. So what's the problem, oh Roger Dodger? Well, I'll tell you why. I just can't simply seem to get over the "gag reflex". Literally can't stand to have a mouth coil wedged in my mouth for more than 20 seconds or so. Am I placing it in there incorrectly? Even a small mouth coil to me is like stuffing a wad of Kleenex in my mouth--- with my immediate overwhelming urge to spit it out. Any way to get over what I know to be this kinda nutso reaction? I have at least 50 unused mouth coils sitting around in my basement someplace- both plastic and paper- would love to do the full Baxt routine someday. Believe me, I tried, got nowhere. With Robert Baxt- his routine goes on and on and on- that's what makes it so funny as he hits the back of his head, etc.. But I could only get into it for a quarter of a minute or so before I wanted to cough the entire coil out... Any hope for me? |

We've gone far afield from the topic of "Super Simple Gospel Magic Tricks" so I wanted to get back on point and point out that Fine gentleman and wonderful magician Roger J. Bus of Michigan was kind enough to point out to me that there is a very popular Australian Christian band known as 'Hillsong', who have a recorded a song titled “Jesus is my Superhero” that name drops Batman, Superman, and Spiderman in the lyrics. I mention this because I have a comic book prediction routine that's super simple at http://robertbaxt.com/productCOMICALcomicbookPrediction.html It packs big and plays small and gets laughs as you can see in the video on that webpage. With so many superhero movies these days, it's the perfect setup and there are comic books about the Lord and biblical characters available and one of these could be the prediction book!

And Magic Bus, I truly wish I had some advice about overcoming a gag reflex. I can only tell you that I only keep the coil at the front of my mouth behind my teeth and that I use Cresey brand 25 foot coils exclusively.

I have Robert's Comic prediction and like it because it's adaptable. Anything that fits into the holder can be used: comic books, children's books, pictures, jumbo cards, jumbo flashcards, different colored silks... really, any "flatter" items can be used and left in the holders so it can be folded up and packed in your case.
Thanks Robert for some great products! |
