Searched this forum and found a few brief mentions of the following but no specific mentioning of the following.
I wanted to suggest two wonderful books for those that cherish puzzles and magic. MATHEMATICAL PUZZLES OF SAM LOYD Volumes One and Two - selected and edited by Martin Gardner (Dover, 1959) . The two volumes are a compendium of his huge CYCLOPEDIA of PUZZLES, available, with some effort, for those who love the smell and taste of rare old tomes. I've cherished these fascinating volumes for much of my life and dug them out after discovering this forum. Loyd, as most of you probably know, was one of the greatest puzzle makers, inventing thousands of them in his lifetime (1841-1911) Here follows a few links so you might readily locate Loyd's brilliant works. TEN Loyd puzzles HERE for your immediate gratification: http://thinks.com/puzzles/loyd/loyd.htm You can buy Volume Two for $3.20 cents at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det......v=glance and a quick web search will yield much more on the clever fellow. I believe his "Disappearing Chinaman" (patented 1896) was recently reprinted beautifully on a card included in THE PARADOX BOX, one of those lovely boxed sets of odd cards and puzzles which have appeared at high-end or eclectic bookshops in the last decade. Also wonderful is the boxed set SURREALIST GAMES. Full of Corpse Exquisites etc. Charles S |
