If you do a good show, and get a good salary, I have not problem with that whatsoever.
Keep it or give it away. Your choice. No problem with that either. Remember, I never said that UK performers overcharge. I quoted someone else saying that people who give gifts are overcharging, but yet this person clearly stated he gets a good salary, and keeps it all so he can be richer! (Or at least, he said he'd be poorer if he had to give some of it away. Sounds like the same thing to me.) I have no problem with a person keeping it all. I have a problem with someone accusing people of overcharging just because they choose to be GENEROUS towards their customers, and not keep it all. I don't pad my fees, to allow for gift-giving. It really is a generousity thing, that comes out of my pocket, salary I earned for my hard work. And the rewards for doing so are awesome! I might object a little to all the bragging that has been done on this thread (look how much I earn, look what I have bought, look what I can do with my money), but that's a different story for another time. Haha! - Donald. P.S. John, if I send a thank you note, without a gift, that is not bribery (according to your definition). If I made a thank you call, without a gift, that is not bribery (according to your definition). I have also said I don't tell my customers about my referral rewards program, I simply ask for a referral, nothing more. I give them the gift and thank you after the fact. In this case, it doesn't fit your definition of a bribe. It's a thank you, a token of appreciation.

Donald Yep! I don't have any problem with that..... but I wonder how you would react if the checkout girl at a groceries supermarket gave you a little gift by way of saying thank for your custom. I guess it would be the size/value of the gift and moreover, the manner in which it was given. Food for thought here (no pun intended). If we are not careful we will be getting back to the discussion of discount vouchers again and overcharging clients for our services in the first place! Oh well, what comes round! Take care. although I said I would comment no further I have decided to comment anyway. I just wanted to say that the intent in which you give gifts (out of generosity) is not always how the recipient feels about getting the gift. what I mean is lets say I reccomended you to a friend because I enjoyed your show then you sent me a gift with a thank you note, I might think oh yes kind guesture (personaly I would not though)on the other hand I might just think that you have taken a kind gesture an my part and are now trying to manipulate me though gifts to reccomend you further. The other thing to consider is consistancy of service Jay abrahams tells a good story about getting a hair cut.... to summarise You go and get your hair cut at a new salon the hairdresser is pleasant offeres you coffee ext chats to you takes a fair time dicusssing how you want your hair and making suggestions gennerally giving a sevice way above what is expected. in a few weeks time you go back , but this time although the service is still exellent the shop is full and things are not quite as good as the first visit. now you feel let down even though had you gone there and got the service you recieved on the second occasion on your first vist you would have been more than happy. Once you set a precident of gifts going overtime with shows ext if you do not continue to deliver that same thing EVERY time you will lose custom... consistancy is important Phillip |

One thing that I have to commend you on, is that it certainly looks like you know where your shows are coming from, even if you aren't thanking for the referral. You know whether it was because of a giveaway at a birthday, a yellow page ad, a referral from another customer, etc. I think that asking your prospect / customer how they heard about you, and what they know about your act, is very important in the booking process. Kudos to you for being so aware, to do so. You are true professionals in every sense of the word! - Donald. P.S. People who bring you lots of shows, or only a few high paying shows, are called "Champions" in the sales world. A "Champion" can bring you business by referrals, or by hiring you themselves. These are the people you want to know!
