Caleb.
I agree, I think that's what they will know has to be done . If "stars" have to go, so be it, balance the books , nurture the youngsters and resign yourselves to at least staying in the Premiership. I am old enough to remember Pete Lorimer and Eddie Gray making their debuts ( and old enough to have seen John Charles play for Leds, go to Italy and come back) I can also recall Leeds playing Stoke and a young Billie Bremner shaking hands with their winger ...none other than the man himself Sir Stanley Mathews, still playing in the top flight as a sprightly 50 year old!!!! Howard,
You've named some players there! I know there are some people who think of John Charles as the greatest ever overseas player to grace Serie A. The advantages of home-grown talent are many, as you know: 1) Like Smith, they'd run through brick walls for the club and each other. 2) They don't cost much, in terms of development, and you only have to sell one (a la Beckham) to recoup your spending. 3) When players grow-up together, they really do develop that proverbial 'telepathic' understanding. 4) Fans generally prefer/forgive homegrown players - it's great tracking someone through the youth team, and watching them progress through the ranks. So exciting to see talent bloom and flourish. Do you have any feeder clubs at Leeds? That's another way to develop talent, of course. Plus, you can cast your net a lot wider. Youth players in England have to live locally now. (I have a friend whose house was bought by Man United, for the family of one of their schoolboy prospects. The lad, and his family, moved to the area, so he could continue playing for the club.) Caleb Strange.

Caleb,
You are right on all counts of course. I am basically a Rugby League Lad, being born and bred in Castleford. In my day, all the kids wanted to play for their home town, not the top club. Half the crowd new the players personally, they probably worked with them during the week!. Allegience to club and shirt was everything. For your info I was at Uni in Manchester 1963-66 and have lived all over the place, being in digs all three years whilst doing my Electrical Engineering degree. Moston, Withington, Chorlton cum Hardy, Longsight (and other beauty spots!!). Strangely enough, I followed Man U then in the days of Mr. Best et. al. Later, in the 1970's, I found myself living in Bolton for 4 years where I watched anything and anybody - all the RL Teams and Bolton, Bury, Oldham and even Rochdale!!. I should think you will spank Millwall, but then again...we, and everyone else, thought Leeds would spank Sunderland in the FA Cup and we all know what happened then ..as they say, Funny Old Game. Take care my friend Howard Have a click on my other post about my lads band..let me know what you think.good bad or otherwise. |

Howard,
It'd be just like Man United to lose in the Cup Final - as you understand though, Saturday's victory was as much about next season as it was about this. I wasn't quite born in '66 (1967), so our paths won't have crossed. I'll chase up your post about your lad's band - my phone line's still a bit iffy at the moment, so if you don't hear back from me straight away, it's not a tactful silence. Caleb Strange.

'Fraid so Howard,
And our phone-line is still not 100% reliable after the underground fire here in Manchester, last week (100,000's lines down, including mine). Maybe I'll go broadband, when the compensation comes through from B.T. . Caleb Strange.

The best signing United made (apart from Eric of course) Best to all..... John

I also love him because after we sold him to Spurs he asked Ferguson did he want him to go and Alex said not if he didn't want to and stayed .
He is a massive part of our success. I love him!!!!!!!!!!
Best wishes John

Yeah,
John's right - Ole is a big favourite, for his skill, for his vision, and, most of all, for his attitude. As for that failed Spurs bid, it was made at the start of the '98-99 season, when we went onto win the Treble, Ole playing a more than significant role in that achievement. Football history could've been very different if we'd have sold him... Regards, Caleb Strange.
