In Stallone's new movie Shade, a marked Bee deck is used towards the end of the movie. I won't go into details regarding the way the cards are marked, but for those of you who have seen the movie, just wanted to know if the cards actually exist and can be bought from Penguin Magic or another outlet or whether the deck was developed just for the movie?

I haven't seen the movie shade, so I don't know which method you are talking about...
HOWEVER, there are many ways of making a marked deck of Bee designs, going from marking a corner of a diamond on the back, all the way to making decks that are completly normal to the naked eye but can be read clear as day by a special camera... Can you explain any more? usually these types of things are "do-it-yourselfs" and won't be found at Penguin of all places.... |

If you do a search on google for "Bee marked cards," you will find several different sources for them.

Commonly referred to as "juice", it works on red back Bee's and has a more of less limited use for all red backed cards. BUT BE VERY CAREFUL - DO NOT USE THIS TO GAMBLE, you could end up in a big hurt, most card sharks know about this but the normal spectator won't have a clue.
You must use your deck which you have previously prepared.

Yes Richard, they're the ones that I'm after, 'Juice'. I'll have a look around to see who sells them.

I had one. I bought somewhere in Japan. But, it's very hard to figure out the number and suits. So I gave up on this marked deck...
though It's a great invention.

There is a deck put out by John Cornelius called "The Dream Deck" It's worth checking out. It's a deck of marked Tally-ho cards an a special red filter to read them. There are some great routines from John Cornelius and Phil Goldstein.

I would advice against all markings that require a filter. First of all, wearing sunglasses or similar indoors needs a good cover story. Second, if somebody in the audience wears also sunglasses (granted, not very likely, but then, the performer wears them too), your very likely out of luck.
Littlebear mentioned that 10 years ago this would not have been seen in a mainstream movie. I disagree There was a Warren Beatty movie called Kaleidoscope where the main character breaks into a playing card factory and marks the back of the playing cards. Luminous markings are also used in a James Bond movie during a baccarat game if memory serves right. My favourite gambling movie however is God of Gamblers, a HongKong production where you can see how dangerous this kind of cheating can be to your health Alex |

I agree with you AlexP...but, learning to read Juice, Flash or Tintwork will take more pratice than Luminous readers.
I put in the effort and found the rewards were great. Juice is very deceptive especially since I designed my own marking patterns which will fool those who know how to read standard juiced marked decks.

I've seen Shade and really enjoyed it! As for marking a deck especially like the one in the movie sounds tedious. Why not purchase a marked deck like Ted Lesley's Marked Deck....incredibly deceptive and very easy to learn. Other methods mentioned here sound deeply involved and not very sure-fire. Thoughts?

I totally agree that Ted Lesley's marked cards are excellent and are great for magic for lay people.
The main reason I stick with shade variations is that since I started to need reading glasses. It looked strange for me to take out a pair of glasses to read the marks. In additon, I can read shade from across the table (8+ feet away.)....Can't do that with a Lesley deck and distance makes the effects more disarming. Finally, I enjoy fooling other knowledgeable magicians and occasionally some gamblers come into New York from out of town. They are also fun to trick with a marked deck that they may already have. (since my patterns are different, they can't find them.) Just my 2 cents for what it is worth.
