Hi Guys!
I'm currently working on my rubber band magic, and while I was searching for some nice effects I saw this little glimpse of one of Nate Staniforth's tricks with apparently a rubber band. The trick in question happens from 0:10 mins to 0:15 mins in this video. Yes, we can only see 5 seconds of the trick but it seems to be a very strong trick that ends with the rubber band above the wrist of the spectator while the magician is grabbing his closed fist. The people at talkmagic.co.uk can't figure it out. I also contacted Dan Harlan that is the guru of sorts on rubber band magic and bar stunts and he told me that he also can't figure out what kind of trick it is based on those 5 seconds. He thinks it has something to do with Hanson Chien's "Touch" but with no certainty. I tried to contact Nate Staniforth himself but unfortunatly had no answer. Do you know if that is a comercial effect or where I can find more information about it? This is boggling my mind for months! It seems like my kind of trick - visual and in the spectator hands. The video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxE-xlUgfyc Thanks for the help. |

I think I've seen something along this line.
If the effect is getting the rubber band on the spec's wrist: Marcus Eddi(sp) did something like this in his Penguin Live demo, Penguin recently introduce some (beginner?) rubber band magic. (But Dan should have known of those sources) To me however, the effect seemed to end with the rubber band coming *off* of the spectators wrist, which I think would be harder (unless a dupe is used) but you've peaked my interest to look through my other sources (when I get some time ) John

To be clear, I didn't think *this* was Touch... I just recommended Touch as a great rubber band trick.
Having had another look at the video (this time at 25% speed), it appears as though he has just done Crazy-Man's Handcuffs (Arthur Setterinton's Penetrating Rubber Bands) through the spectator's wrist. |

Dan Harlan, you sir are a genious! I think that is spot on! CMH through the spec's wrist makes total sense! So simple yet so powerful. I have just tried that with my own arm and it works great! What a brilliant idea!
My mind was boggled because those kids were reacting in a kind of creeped out way to that rubber band effect and I couldn't figure out what it could be. CMH through the spec's wrist makes total sense because it becomes an arm penetration effect and I can see that freaking out the more sensitive people. Why didn't I ever think of that? It's perfect for a third phase in the CMH routine. I will test it out and work on that idea but I have a feeling this will go straight to my top 3 favorite rubber band effects. Once again, thank you Dan for being such a generous and humble person. My mind can finally rest after months and months of trying to figure out what that effect was ahah. |

Dan:
You have better eyes than me! Thanks for the contribution. Using a CMH method for a penetration through another object is good (I've seen someone do that through something like a coffee cup handle). That basic method is not limited to rubber bands, in fact it is the first trick I remember doing (but my memory is not that great anymore ) While in the second grade, using a loop of string, I passed the string through my neck. Afterwards the teacher took me out into the hallway! That is usually not a good sign! In this case she wanted me to show her how I did it, so that she could do in on her husband. I don't remember if I showed her; probably not. Ricardo: Although Dan may well have answered your question correctly, I'm still intrigued to look for an effect that is echoing around in my brain. But I was in NYC today and didn't get back to that. But I will offer the following possibilities: - In the second DVD of Sankey's Amazing Magic Tricks Anyone Can Do, he teaches an effect ("Penetrating"?) that gets a rubber band onto the magician's / spectator's hand while they hold each others hand. (the reverse could also be done by the same method, which would look like what we thought was being done in the above video clip) HOWSOMEEVER, the method requires some cover, and a dup. - The method that is used to break and restore a rubber band, or used to put a solid ungimmicked ring onto a solid ungimmicked rubber band, could be used to pass a rubber band (that is looped on a spectators wrist) through his wrist. I've not done the original effects, but they are available commercially, but I don't remember the product name (I think there are several sources though). No cover, no dup's, but some handling. I will still try to look for the other effects that I vaguely remember. John

Ok, thanks John, I will check that DVD when I have the opportunity, that looks interesting.
If you find the effect you are looking, let me know in this post. Many thanks! |

No real progress here, but I think the video that I was thinking of was a release by Penguin: Rubber Deception . It has a rubber band that jumps from around the magi's hand onto the specs hand. This is a good effect, but my understanding of the method, it probably would not allow the band to jump onto the specs forearm.
The other effect that was rattling around in my head, was an effect by Marcus Eddie(sp) on his Penguin Live lecture, where the magic throws a rubber band onto his own arm. Setting that up to do onto a specs arm would work, BUT the spec would see what he should not see. Hence, it would not be magical to him. He may not understand why it works, but it would not seem magical. If you had a stooge to assist you, others would see it as amazing. For the penetration of the rubber band through the specs forearm(starting w/the band under, not on the specs forearm) with no cover, a Crazy man's handcuffs type of move would seem the way to go. If you want to see *many* variations of the CMH, and other linking effects with rubber bands, check out Link! by Nabil Murday (but the basic move can be learned from other sources, including the DVD series from Sankey that I mentioned above (Amazing Magic Tricks anyone can Do). To get a rubber band that is on the specs arm, off that arm, I think it would take some cover and a dup (but the effect will work better for putting the rubber band onto the specs held finger). John
