Beautiful quote by S.H. Sharpelll
"Words on Wonder" (1984):''The underlying purpose of Magic in its many aspects, is not to deceive people, but to encourage them to approach Life and the Cosmos in a state of Wonder." |

I have read through this entire thread some posts three or four times just to see if I am getting it, because quite frankly I have not been. I still don't know if I have. I have personally never felt guilt performing magic, and have always enjoyed other performances with the same sense of wonder as I always have, but will admit I gravitate to a particular niches in magic, and yes, sometimes I mentally reverse engineer the magic, but not on the level of dismantling the performance or the performer.
I certainly understand insecurity that comes from feeling like you're going to trip things up and be exposed, but that's more of a self-intimidation factor than it is guilt. Is it the particular type of performance? Is it pulling someone out of the audience and making them feel foolish to the jeers of the audience sort of thing? If I that was part of my performance I would most certainly feel guilt if the audience had not signed up for this type of show, but if the audience came for the insults knowing it was part of the package - then I would not at all. As far as guilt over being deceptive - maybe its not a such psychologically sound thing to perform magic it can't be done without the trickery. If just can't, and if you feel insecure and guilty because of it.. Why do it unless it is some sort of therapy. And if that is the point, you probably have a fundamental understanding of the subconscious barriers you need to overcome. I seems to me it can be isolated to three possibilities Environmental Self-intimidation, Social Guilt, and Subconscious Barriers. All of which will need to be addressed differently based on the individual. |

Why do magic even if one feels some degree of guilt? Because the positive emotions outweigh the negative!
Same with most endevours, I rarely feel anything 'pure', always mixed. I cannot think of many (any?) instances of a pure positive emotional state - there's always some element of sadness, regret, guilt, fear or whatever mixed in. That's just me, I guess - and I don't think I'm the only one who might be described as emotionally hyper-sensitive, or just plain mixed up, lol! I suspect a lot of people are, or will discover themselves to be if they introspect more. Regardless, I enjoy magic and even enjoy performing it, the small degree of guilt and larger degree of fear, notwithstanding. |

Well, TW, I think it's great that you've made us aware of this. I, at least, appreciate it and find it fascinating.
Speaking only for myself, I don't have mixed emotions about magic. I find it only positive. Of course, negative emotions can creep in due to circumstances; if I screw up a trick; if the gig sucks; if someone is uncooperative; if a heckler just won't let go; etc. But in and of itself, for me magic is nothing but joy and fun. That's why I do it. It's the one thing in my life that isn't emotionally complicated. I'm like a dog with a bone.

Have you watched the documentary Our Magic? If you haven't I'm pretty sure you'd love it |

Is what has been described in this thread similar to if not the yin and yang? Seemingly opposite or contrary forces with the dark and the light out of balance. In the examples presented in this thread performing magic produces a level of gratification, joy, and happiness even though there is a dark undertow.
If this is a common theme with other things in our daily lives, perhaps performing magic is actually therapeutic by helping achieve balance eventually absolving these contradicting feelings. Not only with magic, but trickle into other areas of our lives a little at a time. Performing magic is not imposed upon us like other aspects of our daily routine. We chose to perform it. I imagine continuing to perform magic will eventually push these feeling aside and yin and yang (the dark and the light) will find harmony... |
