I like wearing my tux, evben tho some feel tuxes are old fashioned.
Last weekend I had a show at a local community centre. While I was setting up, a mom and a little boy came up to me. The little boy said "Are you a magician" I said "I sure am" He said, "See Mom. I told you. He LOOKS like a magician." Made me feel pretty good.

A very good point!
While some performers may decry the traditional magician's appearance, to a lay person, a magician is almost always a guy in a tux. Let's face it: That is the public's impression of a magician. Period. You MAY go against that and be another Doug Henning, IF (and only IF) you are as good as Henning was and have Henning's clout. (Same with Copperfield, Blaine, etc.) Any top magician (that's TOP) will tell you that it is essential to look the part, on and off stage. The late British performer Harold Taylor used to position his wife on one side of London's Trafalgar Square and walk across to the other side. If she didn't see at least half the people, whom Harold passed by, turn and look approvingly at him, then Taylor figured he wasn't turned out "properly". Oscar Munoz, gold cups winner at the IBM international convention, said essentially the same thing: Look your best at all times, performing or not, because you never know who you will run into. I suppose someone can perform in a dirty T-shirt and jeans, and argue that the magic is what's important. And I supposed someone can run the four-minute mile with an anvil tied to each foot, too. It's just that, in half a century in magic, I've never seen either one! |

"See Mom. I told you. He LOOKS like a magician." This you took as a compliment? Just teasing. I would have to say, for me, being magical is more an attitude than the way you dress. To that end I'd prefer someone say, "You look magical." rather than, "You look like a magician." It is just a matter of perspective I guess. Tom |

I was recently a guest at a big premier party here in Nashville. No costume, just me being myself. I introduced myself to the band playing. Said nothing about being a magician. The lead singer flat out asked me if I was a magician. Out of the blue. He said my confident nature made him think that I might be a magician.
It's all attitude, baby! |

I don't know about Blaine, but for Copperfiled and Henning, the answer is "yes". However, I don't consider Henning's garb to be "casual" though. |

"Always dress like you have someplace better to go to afterwards."
I read that someplace and sadly can’t remember where I read it. But in my opinion, good advice nonetheless. I would rather be caught too dressed up than being underdressed anytime! |

Jeff McBride mentions this several times on different videos he has out. I don't remember for sure who he attributed the quote too. Nick |
