I appreciate the icon for "like this post", but was wondering if we can have "don't likes" as well. This would not refer to posts that are so bad they need to be reported, etc. It would be just to express a "don't like" for whatever reason! Lynn

That's an interesting idea, but on other forums I've been on where they had such a thing it was often abused and they ended up abandoning it.

Wouldn't it be better to express your disapproval in the form of a reply? This is a forum after all.

I suppose I wanted to give fair play to "don't likes". Why have "like this post" at all? It almost sounds like an election the way it stands... I vote for this or that post (and perhaps the candidate behind the post). btw, I'm curious how clicking on a "don't like" icon can be abused. Individual posts can obviously be very abusive at times; but I wasn't sure about the "don't like" icon. Perhaps the solution would be to just keep the forum without either icon. There have been times I've replied to a post I disagreed with; and not wanting to repeat myself (when the other person has), I just wanted to reply "don't like" and not engage in pages long snipes which veer off course. btw I liked both your posts AND disagreed a bit with them! It can be abused depending upon how it is set up.
On other boards individual posters have like/dislike tallies or approval ratings - which can easily be manipulated with someone with a personal grudge who just spams the dislike everyday for no reason. Or a whole clique so spams. Also, dislikes are often given out for petty reasons, or simply for differing opinions - esp on politics or religion. I'm afraid people tend to be very badly behaved in the Internet Even here each thread has a like tally, trying to offer some indication of quality or usefulness. If they also had a dislike tally that then provides a way for people to try and bury the threads of posters they don't like or opinions they don't like or even products they are in competition with. In my experience dislikes (and likes too) are no indication of quality whatsoever - people on the Internet simply can't be trusted to apply them fairly, consistently and without personal motivation. Yes, I see the "likes" function used to promote personal agendas creating cliques and a division in so many threads and topics. It also can create a false perception or misbelief to an uninformed or unknowing member here.

Generally, on internet forums ... folks are usually encouraged to take everything they read with a grain of salt - including how many "likes" or "dislikes" any given post may get.
Most folks have no problem doing just that. Personally, I see no real need for either button, I don't ever "like" a post, and I ignore how many "likes" any given post has received. It all works pretty well actually! |

"Likes" don't seem to be a big part of the community experience at the Magic Café. For instance, the "Recommended books for beginners" thread in "New to Magic" has more than 150,000 views, and only 41 likes. The wonderful "Howie Diddits" thread in "Secret Sessions" has more than 92,000 views, and only 52 likes. For better of worse, Magic Café members just aren't in the habit of clicking that "like" button. Since the rating of posts isn't a bit part of the community "vibe" here, I don't see a need for a "don't like" button."
It's still magic even if you know how it's done.
