My name is Rhett Bryson. I have been a performing magician for over 45 years. My "day job" is serving as a professor of Theatre Arts (scenic and lighting design, directing, acting) at Furman University - Greenville, SC.
I have and do perform in a wide variety ways... from large stage shows, platform and banquet magic, restaurant work, private close-up, street magic and theatre performances. My performances are comic in nature and my work in magic comes directly from my passion and love for the world of theatre and acting. Viewing the various links on my magic pages will afford you a good look into my magic activities and interests: http://alpha.furman.edu/~bryson/magic.html One of the most interesting performance gigs I have ever had was to create a 19th century parlour magician (professor John Henry Pepper) and perform in the Spring Festival of Flowers in the Biltmore House in Asheville, NC (America's largest private residence). http://alpha.furman.edu/~bryson/pepper.html http://alpha.furman.edu/~bryson/pepper97.html I have been associated with Algonquin McDuff and Dexter Cleveland for over 25 years in a magic book publishing venture named Jester's Press. http://alpha.furman.edu/~bryson/books.html I have, in addition, published a number of small magic books on my own - " small magical ideas", The LF Language (a wee book), and "The Devil's Prayerbook" (another wee book) which is a collection of all of the numerical coincidences associated with a deck of cards along with the complete history of the Soldier's Prayerbook story. I also collaborated with the unusual wee book magic publisher Bruce Dunn on quite a number of wee magic books. My research interests in magic are quite varied. I seem to carve out for myself areas where I can become the world's greatest authority on a narrow and esoteric subject. I have published web pages promulgating some of my work in these areas: 1. The Banana Man - http://alpha.furman.edu/~bryson/BananaMan/ I had an article published about my research on the Banana Man in magic Magazine (Aug 2002) 2. Imps on the shoulders of magicians on magic posters: http://alpha.furman.edu/~bryson/impimages.html 3. Foodini the Great: http://alpha.furman.edu/~bryson/FoodiniWeb/index.html In addition, I have been collecting information for many years on Edward M. Massey and have plans for a book of all of his invention and magic. I also have a strong interest in battery operated and wind-up magician toys (and had a major article about these toys in Magic magazine (Wee Wizards - Dec 2000)) I am amassing what I believe to be the world's most complete and largest collection of magnetic Scotty dogs and variations thereof. (You would be AMAZED to discover the number and type of the variations - including a most interested one invented by Martin Gardner!) I plan to eventually have a web page detailing these interesting items in the near future. I am pleased to join the Magic Café - and hope to be an active part of the discourse here. I have long marveled at the Internet's ability to connect us from such vast distances. Click here to view attached image. |
