So.. no matter what I wear at restaurants or bars, some patrons will always ask me for the bill or to order some food. I am sure this happens to many others as well.
Are there any jokes out there for such situations? There has to be some.

Not everything has to be a joke. Often they are looking for service because they are not getting it in a timely manner and a joke might be out of place.

If a customer thinks I'm part of the wait staff and asks for something I pass the message along to the proper person. A week ago this happened and a little later the person came up to me and apologized profusely. She had no reason to apologize but it made me think it might be better if I let them know that I am not a waiter while still helping them.
So I can see where a funny line might be helpful here. Just because some magicians over do gags doesn't mean a bit of humor isn't a helpful thing. |

Yes I always help them out by fetchng the right person. But first I tell them that I am not with the waiting staff. But I have been thinking that a little bit of humour would show them that I am there for some fun time and perhaps even leave them eager for me to come over to their table.

The only problem is often a difference in perception.
If they have gotten to the point at which they have to ask for service, sometimes it is just not the right time for humor, regardless of what most magicians seem to think. Don't forget they are probably not really there to see you in the first place, otherwise they would have known who you were and what you do. So they already have a sort of "issue". Using humor in that situation does not always work out the way most guys think it does. I have seen humor used in these situations and it just makes things one heck of a lot worse. Do as you like. But it is possible that there is a reason that most magicians in general work between the salad and the entree. Of course you tell them who you are and what you do. I always lay it off on the fact that I can't help them because I am not qualified and find the right person. I am qualified to do that. I guess it depends on where you are working. I am talking about restaurants where service matters. High end places people figure EVERYONE is there to cater to them, and they are right. The whole experience is about service. I have no idea about family nights at chain restaurants. Maybe this is not such a big deal. No wrong answer here. Just saying that there is a different point of view from the joke monkey reflex so many seem to want to exhibit.

Jokes you'd get from other magicians are almost always horrible. Just check out the "Now that's funny" forum.... pretty horrible, right? Right!
I would really just let one come to you from your experiences. It might take years to come up with something perfect for you but it will be far better than what another magician will give you. Any awesome joke/line that really exists, they'd keep to themselves anyway, and for good reason. Do it yourself. You'll be happy you did.

When DJing if I am not behind the booth I often get mistaken for a member of staff. I always try to help with their question. I will explain that I am their DJ tonight. I tell them that I will do my best to help. If that involves showing the way to xx I use the time to get to know them. I judge their character. I ask them their name. I may often light-heartedly say as I have helped you, you can help me later and be the first on the dance floor at the end of the night anyone that I have help often come over to me to say good night.
When I am working at a venue it is a team effort to ensure that all of the guests having a great time. Use these questions to your advantage. |

I´m also with Doyle on this one.
It all depends on your persona and the guest. If they are very upset about the lack of service, a joke may very well make things worse. But, on the other hand, if they´re having a good time and just need to order a second drink, ask for some water or more bread...I say with a smile "of course...I´m actually the magician tonight...but I´ll use my powers and get someone over to help you".
My background: Loved magic for 25 years, always wanted to do paid gigs but never had the courage. Faced my fears some years ago and went pro.

First thing that came to mind was, my magical influence is limited with the staff, but let me see who/what I can conjure up.
There is a line for every situation, but it is your ability to read the person making the request combined with the phrasing that you can come up with in the moment delivered in a believable and sincere manner that determines whether the line works. Tread carefully...

"Actually, I am the magician here. For my first act, I will make your waiter appear. Excuse me while I go cast my spell."
