I did and I tested them a number of different ways, but so many different electronic systems are out there I was simply unable to test all of them. I made it very clear to buyers that I had not been able to test them with all systems, and that if they did not work they would be offered a refund. I never advertised the items as being available but spoke individually to customers who had contacted me privately and specifically told me they wanted the magnetic coins. Again, all buyers were told the coins may not have been tested with their system and that if they didn't work they would get a full refund.
In the end none of the buyers used systems that worked reliably with the coins as they were supplied to me and after a significant number of people told me this I decided the best thing to do was offer a blanket refund. This covered around 15 to 20 sales in total. The whole project cost me a fair amount of money and I won't be getting any more made. I don't particularly regret doing it, buyers were aware they were buying what was essentially a prototype, and at least now I know its not something I want to repeat. I certainly wouldn't have sold it as a full product at the stage of development it was at, and if I hadn't explained the situation to the buyers of course that wouldn't have been cool. HUMINT itself has sold extremely well because the base routine that the coin comes with is extremely practical and the method is pretty much the exact opposite of an electronic solution to the problem. No gaffs no gimmicks no sleights. The coin is ungimmicked and although I understand the appeal of using a gaffed coin in some way, the point of the routine is the curious nature of the prop and personally I think that having a deliberately unusual prop that you want people to be interested in be the gimmick that enacts the trick is a structural mistake. I’ve enjoyed performing this for years but I have found a problem with it, because people find the coin interesting I’ve had a few people want to get one. When you google truth lie coin guess what the first hit is! Not a great look and its happened too often now.
May have to go back to using Phill’s original version with a normal coin which is a shame. It was mentioned in this thread that a site was being set up to sell to laymen, did this ever happen as this may allow me to head the problem off by directing them to this site? Im guessing not as there can’t have been much demand? |

I'll be honest I didn't spot this so I'm not sure how to fix it, I try to be very careful firewalling tricks from their names so they can't get googled, but I'm really not sure how to write the copy for HUMINT without using the words truth, lie and coin? I'm going to go and have a look at the copy for the site now, see if I can figure it out. I have been pushing the coin on Etsy in the hopes that that will be the main place the coin can be found online but it's obviously hard to build traction for that.

I prefer the Humint coin to yes /no if I’m being honest but thank you for the suggestion!
Phill do you have a link to it on etsy? Maybe I can prevent them googling by sending them directly to etsy? It certainly isn’t everyone but I’ve had it happen enough now to start thinking about it. It’s your fault for designing such a nice coin :-D |
