Hi !
I need your help ! This is a video of me trying some new effect for a stage show. Feel free to leave comments here. I'd like to know how the first effect is perceived. It seems that not everybody sees it. https://youtu.be/Km77cXnXccU Thank you and happy new year ! Merci et bonne année ! |

Yes, I saw the first penetration, but it's subtle enough that I might have missed it if attention wasn't called to it. Very nice, by the way. The kicker with the arm was particularly effective as well.
Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.

There is no need to do the same effect 5 times. Once they have seen the effect, they have seen it.
I suggest you so the penetration off arm through silk, then do some other effect, and for the final you could repeat the effect again if you have nothing else in your collection of moves. If you don't have Mainly Manipulative Magic book by John Alborugh, I recommend you buy it, as it has some nice unique silk, ring, and reel moves. |

Thanks a lot for the feedbacks.
The ring through arm is inspired by a move in the jack miller linking ring routine. I find it easyer to do it with the silk than only with rings as in the Miller routine. Your feedbacks are precious for me because I'm still in doubt if this move is effective or not. It's always dificult to be very aware of how spectators perceives an effect and especially if it's a direct and visual effect. Thank you Bill for the reference. At this point I m experimenting moves. I think I will keep only 2 or three diferent moves with this props, a spectator keeping the ring in his hands at the end : it could be a nice way to introduce my linking rings routine. |

The second penetration was a real treat, the 1s one where your fingers came together and fumbled or paused, killed the rhythm of the effect. The rest were very well done as well.
The book I referenced is found old copies from England, and will not be around much longer, very old stock that the person keeping them from us, decided to release. These are not reprints but original publications. Just so you know, they are all going very fast. There is not reason you cannot combine reel and non-reel ring and rope/silk penetrations in the same routine. I would start with the non-reel, and then blow them away with the reel effects. Just practice and rehearse some more and get it all down smoothly. Work on changing the tempo as well and hand and arm positioning to make it look different and more interesting. |

Corneille; The first penetration would almost certainly be missed by an audience. However this can be easily remedied by showing how the situation should be before the first penetration. You do this already with the hanky as part of the set up action for the final penetration through the arm. So...try using this setting up action with the first penetration, then the difference between what should happen and what does happen will be clearer for the first penetration.... then you can do the 2nd penetration as you currently do it.... and then finish this phase with the ring through arm.
Visually, I liked it.

I couldn't see it, totally fooled - very nice! thinking it might be something similar to the gimmick used in silk thru microphone stand

Sealegs thank you for the feedback. At that point I'm just experimenting, but I think it may be interesting to play with the fact that the public don't see what's wrong before I show them in slow motion.
Bill08, you're right for the gimmick |

If the audience isn't aware that an effect has taken place its both unlikely they'll be able to recognise this when it's pointed out to them in the way you suggest and is also theatrically non starter. Even if they can think back and realise that an effect must have taken place the moment has long passed and nothing comes from it. (except perhaps confusion)
It's always good though to try different approaches so no harm in experimenting and playing with ideas. It's the sifting out of what works from what doesn't that can lead to progress and new presentations. Of course along the way there'll also be things that don't wok too but that's all part of the journey.
