A handful of coins are collected, an old quarter (with the eagle) is removed from them, then all the other coins are dumped into a spectator’s cupped hands. The magician removes a Sharpie marker from his pocket.
Magician: "Sir, would you take this Sharpie and mark this quarter so that it will be recognizable in the future?" The spectator does so. Magician: "Have you ever had money vanish from your pocket without you knowing where it went? Yes, most people have. Well you may not have known this, but every time it happened, it was one of these quarters with the eagle on the back. They would magically fly away and of course you couldn’t see them." By now everyone is looking at the magician like, "Huh? What cha mean there critter (This is Texas)?" Magician: "I’ll show you. Open your cupped hands slightly (referring to the spectator with all the coins)". The quarter is dropped in with all the others. Magician: "Shake your hands, which will mix that quarter in with all the others. Think of them as a giant flock of birds, cupped inside your hands, never to escape. Yes, if you help me do this successfully, you can keep the birds and take them home with you." The other spectators giggle at this, since it’s their change that’s being used, but since it’s just a little change, they never mind if the guy does keep it. The magician removes a colored piece of paper with cuts in various places along it, from his pocket. It is brown and colored similar to that of a bird nest. He hands it to a spectator for examination. Magician: "Here you go. Do you know what that is?" The spectators of course don’t. Magician: "It’s a magic bird’s nest." The magician takes it back, shows all sides of it then instantly transforms it into a cup shaped configuration. Magician: "Here it is, the magic bird’s nest. I built it myself. Now it has been activated, magically of course. Watch!" The origami thingy and the hands are once again shown empty. They can see inside the nest. It is moved around the spectators and into the air. Magician: "There, I caught it!" Now the paper bird’s nest is tilted over and the signed quarter falls out into the magician’s hand. The spectator always opens his/her hands since that’s where the signed quarter is to be (in their minds) then freak out hard. All others follow suit. The magician opens the nest back out, shows the quarter to be the signed one, puts it and the paper piece into his pocket, and walks away with a good memory and a quarter tip. Magically, Jack |

Hi Jack!
Thanks for putting in the time to construct such a well thought out routine! Is it your own? I particularly like the application of making it, "memorable" with the magic birds nest! Thank you again for sharing this wonderful routine with us!
Courage is the willingness to be afraid and act anyway!

Hi back Steve (my brother’s name is Steve),
Sorry I haven’t responded sooner. I usually don’t make it this far down the main menu list. Yes, it’s one of mine. It’s already fully described, illustrated, and ready for magic consumption and will be one of the illusions in my upcoming book (or really fat manuscript) ’Possible Impossibilities’. Thanks again for the kind words, Jack McCoy |
