Many years ago, a magician friend of mine, with a key to my apartment, secretly went through every closet and drawer in the place and set up every open deck I owned - dozens, almost a hundred of them. A few weeks later, when he was in town again, he fooled the crap out of me with an impossible trick. Unfortunately, I can't remember the effect, but I do remember it blew me away. He didn't tell me what he had down to my decks until the next time he came over. It drove nuts for weeks. When he finally told me, he mentioned the name of the book the Idea and effect came from. But I can't remember that, either. If anyone has a clue to the book it came from, please let me know. I'd love to get it.
Somewhere in the depths of my memory, I'm coming up with John Carney, or Paul Gertner. But I'm not sure. Any Ideas? Thanks, Brian

If you had more recollection of the effect, perhaps we could better help pinpoint it. As it is, all I can say is that I have a habit of setting others' decks up in my memorized deck order (with a cut, so it isn't always the same card at the face) wherever I go and have a chance to do so. Before I memorized a deck, it'd usually be in another form of stack (e.g. Si Stebbins, BCS, etc.). There are limitless miracles you can perform with a stacked deck, and especially one that is memorized. To be honest, if you start doing this yourself, you'd be better of just studying books with stacked deck material and picking out or working with effects that suit you.

Just found out from the friend that it was from a Chris Kenner book. I checked "Totally out of Control" and it doesn't seem to be in there.
Yes,sgtgray, I know about stacked deck effects (big fan of Aronson and Tamariz) and I can memorize someone else's deck in a couple of minutes. But the effect that was done on me absolutely fried me. I'd just love to know what it was. In hindsight, I didn't do any stacked or memorized work back then, so it might have been something fairly pedestrian, but I still would like to know what it was. But thanks for the input. ~ Brian

Your friend is dedicated, wow!
Perhaps we can help if he can describe the effect and you post that info here? |
