Anyone here have any advice on or about straitjackets? Like which ones to buy or avoid also who has the best information on it? Would it be better to have a video or a book? Is there any truth to dislocating your shoulder to get out. Don,

I recommend the Jay Leslie video "The Strait Jacket Escape" and John Novack's "Escapes from a Strait Jacket" book.
Which to buy is a matter of preference. The big issue is gaffed or not. Search the Café and you will see a strong preference for ungaffed. There are a number of styles, some more suitable for some types of escapes than others. If you get the video first, you can make a more informed choice. You don't dislocate your shoulder to get out, it just feels like you did. No pain, no gain! Feel free to PM me for sources. Yours, Paul |

I can agree 100% to the 'no pain, no gain' part fo that post. Strait Jackets are not for everybody.
If you are doing it to impress another escape artist, then a regulation high security posey is fine, if you are going to put on an act, then it depends on the requirement of the act. |

Check the straight jacket floats website. They have pics and descriptions including difficulty on about 30 or so different jackets. They even have a pic of my 40s lace up jacket.

Site is very different than most. Collectables are the focus.
http://members.tripod.com/sjfloats/ Here is the old one I have. Mine looks much cleaner compared to the pic. You can see the turquoise paint on the buckle if you look close. They can't ID theirs either. It is very secure if laced tightly under the ribcage and doesn't need a crotchstrap. The Pat. date on the buckle is 1939 but the jacket is early to mid 40s. http://members.tripod.com/sjfloats/metaltied.html

Dr. Zodiac,
See the Leslie video for upside down jacket info. For the jacket, use one without a crotch strap. If you are performing for civilians (rather than escape artists) you can use something relatively easy like the Humane Restraint jacket. You also need gravity boots (Google "gravity boots" for suppliers). Yours, Paul |

Don,
Did you ever decide on what kind of Jacket? Went and got the Leslie tape and a Humane jacket myself. I looked at Cannons and SJFoats and a couple other ones and was pretty confused as to the type I wanted to get, so that was an easy way to get my feet wet. Now I'd like to find more antique ones if possible.

KSD I was thinking of a full body one. or a Humane one which I can pick up from the company myself. I'll like to get a reproduction of a old one but the Person wont give me hardly any info on it. Don,

Dr. Zodiac,
You could also look into bungee jumping equipment for ankle harnesses for upside down SJ work. http://www.fettke.com/bungee/equip.htm |

My humble suggestion is to get a legitimate jacket of any kind; humane restraint co., etc, and learn to do the deed. Anytime, any place: be able to do it. You will now posses a skill instead of a secret (like using a gaffed jacket) and the basis for a wonderfully versatile and useful and marketable act!

Ed sounds great, but I hate the idea of jeopardizing my life if I don't have to. Trust me, I know what your talking about going ungaffed, but for public demonstrations involving danger, you'd be insane to go ungaffed.
I am looking into stunt workers harnesses for the usdsj escape, I don't think I trust gravioty boots at 150 feet. Z |

What do you call a dangerous public demo? I mean if you're talking about doing something under water or setting the jacket on fire then maybe I'd say use a gaffed jacket.
But for usdsj I think I'd still stick with an un-gaffed jacket. Although I'd probably opt for a jacket that didn't have loops. Roslyn

I'll be doing an usdsj escape from a crane on July 3rd. For that I'm working on a setup that uses webbed straps. Two around each ankle. Then, perpendicular to those, one on either side of each ankle that includes each of the first two. (I know this is hard to follow- maybe I can put some pics on there eventually). Anyways, it's leather lined for comfort and each strap is redundant with each ankle being held individually, again, for redundancy. To fall I'd have to have a complete failures in all eight areas.
