I glanced through it. I still havent finished it. In all I have purchased hundreds of dollars of Kneppers stuff in the past few months. All I can say is that its anoher example of, when it works you have a miracle, when it doesn't, you need an out!
The ghost pen effect, seemed really interesting. I just can't get it to work. I don't see it being very practical in my business of stage or close-up. Its more of a cabaret or an evening of entertaining friends styled effect. I have to say this is up there with my well I haven't finished it so I can't quite comment fully category. There may be a tid bit somewhere in there that makes it worth the cost. Im still looking, Ill tell you in another week or so. |

I'm giving the wonder words a try now, and so far am impressed.
Even though a friend said that they were merely ok, The subtle nuances seem SUPRISINGLY effective. -Likely this post seems worded funny, I'm using subliminal wonder words through out. |

A few years back I would have bought anything from Kenton. After his recent flops I'm not trusting him anymore... Any other comments on this new book?

(this book is probably up there with my favorites)
But I've been trying to keep quiet about it. When is it going out of print? |

I really enjoy everything Knepper does, and Ploys is no exception. I like to play around with the ideas he presents and find everything very usable, even though I am not particularly impressed by his performance style as reflected in Klose Up and Unpublished. I also agree with others that there is an attitude. Nevertheless, it is rare that I find material that I enjoy more. I also appreciate his creative approach to things. For example, his utilization of the trusty old TT in Ploys.

Miraculous Ploys has some great material in it, and contains several great applications of old ideas/gimmicks.
Stirring is a great trick, and is -pretty much- as described in the advertisement. Works with straws that you will be able to find many places. All you need is the straw, and good presentational skills. Very clever principle behind this. The Spirit Pen is a good idea, that utilizes a gimmick that you probably already own. While the concept is good, I don't find it to work very well and I would personally never use it, as I suspect many other people wouldn't as well. Chill is an interesting idea, that somehow seems unfinished, and is something that I wouldn't really do as a stand alone effect. It is not really so much of a trick, and I have been wary of performing it because it really doesn't go anywhere. Also, this is the type of Kenton trick where it seems like there is no way the spectator could not know what is going on, but the aim is more to amaze onlookers by physical reactions of the test subject accompanied by misleading dialogue. This is not a complete waste of space in the manuscript though, because I can see how it could have a strong impact when combined with the next trick I am going to review. Touched in the Head is a clever trick where a spectator feels touches and scratches on his head, when others who are watching swear that the magician is not touching him. Very simple, but somewhat gutsy trick that does work, and like I said, you can incorporate one of the methods of "Chill" into this one for some interesting reactions. There were one or two other tricks in the manuscript worth reading (Post-it Psychometry, A Cut Above), but there are also a few tricks that just make me scratch my head (Most notably, OM Smoke). Overall, Miraculous Ploys is a good read, has a little less rambling than in some of Kentons other works, and has a few tricks that you will probably use. |

A little bird told me that Kenton actually uses a spiral bound 3x5 almost cardlike stock when presenting the Spirit Pen. This extra body (read "stiffness")in this paper stock makes the effect much easier to do mechanically AND looks terrific.
As for the rest of the book, just like any other, there are items you'll use and items you won't. All in all, it's a welcome addition to your Knepper library. |

How much does it cost, and who carries it?
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

In the UK we don't have plastic 'straws' we have plastic 'sticks' They are solid not tubular You could not sip a drink using a UK coffee stirrer Can anybody tell me if they are the same item KK is talking about? TJ |

They are not the same thing, the straws he is referring to look like two extremely thin straws stuck together. However, the straw you describe sounds like it might work anyways, so give it a try.
