I just had to share a video clip of a wonderful routine for memorized deck workers, called Herbert The Trained Rubber Band by Denis Behr.
You can see Denis perform the entire "Herbert" routine in this video trailer (starting 30 seconds in): Effect: Denis introduces his assistant Herbert (who even has his own Facebook page here), a rubber band that has been trained to find any card. A spectator chooses a card which is then lost visibly in the middle of the deck. The rubber band is then wrapped around the deck, and in an instant the rubber band appears wrapped around a single card in the middle of the deck, which is of course the spectator's selection. The trick is repeated by making it even difficult: this time a spectator just names any card, and the rubber band is shown to be wrapped around that card. Comment: This is an excellent demonstration that features great technical skill with cards, and especially beautiful presentation and showmanship! I especially love the moments of warm humour, for example when Herbert is "blindfolded" (by placing him under a spectator's hand) so he can't cheat. The techniques are flawless, and revealing the card with a "humanized" rubber band character makes the whole routine wonderfully entertaining. Source: This is from the new four DVD/video set from Denis called "Magic on Tap", which has 17 routines altogether, including a lot of memorized deck work. For more info about the entire "Magic on Tap" DVD set, see my full review elsewhere on The Magic Café here: Review: Magic on Tap (Denis Behr) - Four amazing DVDs from one of the best card technicians in magic http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......c=664352 |

Definitely my favourite rubber-band-and-card effect!
I think it is first taught in Denis's Handcrafted Card Magic, Volume 2, excellent book. EndersGame, do you know if this version is different? (Looks the same based on the video) |

I don't have the book, only the video, but this is a routine Denis has been doing for a while.

Both volumes of his book are great and have some great memdeck stuff - highly recommended and I'm sure you'll enjoy them if you like his DVDs. Has a great chapter called something like "finding the way home", about returning to your stack after whatever effects/routines.

I absolutely love how he gets to the named card in the stack so effortlessly.

The book "Handcrafted Card Magic Volume 2" from Denis Behr dates from 2011.
Now, with the DVD serie in 2018, Herbert is suddenly a hype. Once more it is proved.... If you want a trick for yourself and you want that nobody else does it: publish it in a book So many hidden gems in books... |

After the original published effect in which Herbert finds the card in the deck, Denis came out with Herbert performing the haunted deck.

What size rubber bands are best for this trick? In the video he says he got his from Japan, so he doesn't know the US size.

Size #16 is about the right size (2.5"x1/16", try to get crepe) - the ones from Japan are 60mmx1.1mm - but honestly, I've tried both and if you have any connections to someone in Japan who can send you a few packages of the ones from Japan, they are worth every penny. You can find a picture of the exact bands on Herbert's FB page somewhere.
