Can anyone tell me what comes in the Tango Eisenhower Chinatown dollar set? Specifically, do you get an un-gaffed Chinese coin along with the gaffed coin?
Thanks! |

I don’t know about their “current” version, but watch out...make sure you are getting real BRASS Chinese Coin. Older versions have a crappy “cast” metal coin painted “brass” color and black paint in imprint. I ordered one from Penguin and sold it. Ordered one from Roy Kueppers which is PERFECT!

I had a Ike magnetic S&S, the outer shell was St Gauden, insert Ike heads/Gauden tail.
Didn’t like it much. Had too much gap. Came with another Gauden and reg Ike I think (?) For this option, I would rather get a Copper/Silver TUC. I don’t know if that option comes in Ike.

After seeing this I already knew Tango's quality was ????? but COIN PAINTED BRASS MONKEY COLOR, CMON. THAT IS THIRD WORLD. I will never order any Tango products without seeing them . which means I will probably never order any products of this company where quality is like totally a chance happening. |

I recently picked up a Tango Eisenhower dollar copper/silver gaff coin. The flip side is a Saint Gaudens copper round.
It strikes me as much too thick. I don’t yet have any matching regular copper rounds to compare it with, side by side (but have some on the way), so I don’t know how thick they are actually supposed to be. If copper rounds are normally much thicker than an Eisenhower dollar, then maybe this thick c/s gaff will turn out to be a good match for copper rounds, at least. Maybe. We’ll soon see. But when its silver Eisenhower side is up, it looks much too thick. Side by side with regular Eisenhower dollars, this c/s coin’s thickness makes it look like two coins stacked one atop the other. Sticks out like a sore thumb. And its bottom half’s thick copper rim also really obviously stands out. Its too bad that Johnson doesn’t carry Eisenhower c/s coins. I have a couple of their Kennedy half/English penny c/s coins, which are very convincing (same thickness as a regular half dollar).

I'm sure Johnson would make you one custom if you send them the coins.
I think Tango has a lot of cheap labor working for him and some of them take pride in what they produce while others not so much. So it can be real hit or miss. I would think it would also depend if Tango is actually on site or not, as often he is traveling. My guess is when he's not around very little ends up in the reject pile. |

That would have been my next question....if anyone had seen Tango's Chinatown Dollar and was it a decent quality...

Well, I received my ordinary St. Gaudens copper rounds. They're thicker than an Eisenhower dollar. The Tango c/s coin is the thickness of a St Gaudens copper round.
So if that's the match you're going for, I guess the Tango product is fine, after all. It's just too bad that it's a good match for a copper round, but not for an Eisenhower dollar (in terms of thickness). I guess that isn't Tango's fault. But it suggests that perhaps there are better choices than copper rounds for use in copper/silver Eisenhower dollar gaffs. Some sort of copper coin that is the same thickness as (not thicker than) an Eisenhower, to avoid such glaring discrepancies. Are those oversized Lincoln pennies as thick as a copper round? Or as thin as an Eisenhower dollar? Or maybe copper rounds could be cut down by gaff makers and used to make versions that are just as thin? Or maybe instead of going with copper, a manufactured brass Chinese coin of the correct thickness would be as good? (Providing, of course, that such a Chinese coin wasn't made of cheaper metal painted to look like brass....)

I've got an Ike/Lincoln penny sun/moon set... The pennies are also copper rounds and a bit larger than the Ikes but not too bad.
It's one of Lassen's "rad clad" commercial Line he no longer makes. I got it 2nd hand but sent it off to him so he could mill down additional pennies to fit the shell. Will post pics shortly. |

Oh, and I don't know why I didn't think of these as well... Jeff Copeland's Tiger-Tan coins. *same* size as an Ike.
He's also got some really cool new coins coming out very soon. (not that these aren't really cool) Www.copelandmagic.com |

Wow, very nice. Same size as an Ike is perfect.
