Can anyone identify one or more reliable magic "tutors" in the NYC area, or online. In some videos I've seen it has been stated that the best way to improve is to have someone instruct you in person. Any suggestions or thoughts?

I'm in L.A. so don't know any NYC magic tutors. But Jeff McBride does Skype sessions from Las Vegas. You can try contacting him if you don't find someone local.

Go to any brick and mortar magic store in your area and ask if they either have or know tutors who can help you.

I've never had a "tutor" myself but definitely see the value in them. However, I have associated myself with some lovely magician friends who I constantly shoot ideas off and discuss routines with. Also the Penguin Live lecture series is a great asset because you get to hear the top pros discuss magic subtleties and their experiences

Hello Teddy!
I'm 86. (Ishould be 87, but, I was sick a year!) HEE HEE! I've been using that awful gag, since I was first an octogenarian, I just don't want you to think that I'm a crotchety old geezer. I saw my first magician when I was 8, in 1938. THAT DAY, I decided to give up my desire to be a fireman, or a cowboy! I found "The Magic Show Book" by Alexander the Magician, in the library. Of course most of the beginner books, then, seemed to be full of "apparatus tricks". --Trick boxes, tubes, cans, and pans. etc. So, I made a pair of Buddha tubes, from a Morton Salt box, and a mailing tube, and other similar props. (As I grew and learned, I quit using that antiquated term ("apparatus") and, learned to use the correct theatrical term (prop). for the next couple of years, I packed those props in an old hat box, found in the attic, and did my "show" for anyone who would watch! The next book, "Fun With Magic" by Joseph Leeming, still had some trick boxes, etc., but also many tricks that could be done with "generic" props! rope, coins, handkerchiefs, ETC.!!! Leeming had opened the door to a whole new world of magic! He even provided addresses of magic shops! (I thought I had died and, gone to Heaven.) Over the next few years, my "show" had a set of Rice Bowls, a pair of Chinese Sticks, a Production Box, and, many rope tricks, silk tricks, etc. I had the unmitigated gall, at the age of 13, to book a show for the Junior High School. We charged 10 cents, the school got half, and, my half ($26.00) gave me a real incentive to learn. Another magician played MY school the following year, and I was introduced to the Misers Dream, Card Flourishes, and the "sucker" silk to egg. From then on, I forgot about those trick boxes, and tubes, and began to learn to use my hands. By the time I was 19, and, in the Navy, I had a half hour show in a leather shaving kit, the size of a cigar box. An agent got me enough work that I could send my Navy paycheck home to the bank every month. After the Navy, I did shows in college, then worked for the Boy Scouts for a few years. (I did lots of shows in summer camp, and, at meetings. Finally, I began touring the USA with my show in a "fat" attache case. I made a good living for 50 years, playing school assemblies. Now, I'm retired, and, do an occasional club date. I even wrote a book about it! Old age, and arthritis have taken away many of the sleights, but, I can still do enough finger flicking to present a decent show. I wrote the above, to help you realize, that you CAN learn a few sleights, and be entertaining, even starting LATE! Just don't waste time, trying to be a second CARDINI! Don't plan on doing an hour and a half show! If you can develop a good 15 minute act, you'll be always welcome at parties, and church socials! Karl Fulves wrote a series of books that need minimal skills. They're inexpensive, Mark Wilson published the "Complete Course In Magic" It's full of good basic tricks that don't require years of practicing sleights. It's also inexpensive. As long as I can hunt & peck this infernal electrisch peckenclacker, I'll be available for a bit of mentoring. Harry Lorayne will very likely drop in and advise you of several books that he has written for guys like you. He won't steer you wrong. Read BOOKS! Learn basic principles! I made a living for 50 years, with a dozen basic "classic" tricks! I suggest that you read my posts. I constantly preach the "same stuff". That's because there is a constant "stream" of new guys.
