I would like to know how common it is, if at all, for card practitioners to perform feats involving a faro shuffle? Is it considered passe or too "old school" or is it featured by many of today's card magicians?
Thanks for your attention.

From what I'm told, from the testimonials I receive, card guys all over the world do effects/routines of mine based on perfect faro shuffles. My first One-Man Parade in Linking Ring Magazine - March, 1964 - consisted of 19 routines based on perfect faros. I don't used 'em anymore 'cause I work only with borrowed decks, so perfect faros are not always possible. I've taught soooo many effects where I eliminated the need for perfect faros in quite a few of my most recent books. Ya' gotta' start reading the good stuff, TeddyBoy!

Actually I'm reading Close-Up Card Magic and was having a problem learning the Faro shuffle to use for The Inseparable Four (p. 148). I got the trick to work only one out of four or five times. But at least I'm reading the good stuff and sticking with it!

A perfect Faro shuffle is definately a great tool to have in your arsenal, but in my opinion you can live a happy cardician's life without learning and/or using it, UNLESS YOU DECIDE TO DELVE INTO THE FASCINATING WORLD OF MEMORISED DECKS!!!
That'll make you WANT to learn it! That's what happened to me, at least ... Mark |

As I said above - I use only borrowed decks, so I've eliminated all necessities for perfect faro shuffles (arthritic fingers have a bit to do with it) - and since I use only borrowed decks I don't do any memdeck things - never found 'em necessary anyway. I've taught a few ways of accomplishing what a perfect faro does - without doing a perfect faro, which can be done with any borrowed deck and with arthritic fingers! - in a few of my books.

I'm not a "card magician" per se, and I have no idea if it's passe or "too old school," but I use Faro shuffles all the time. It's my go-to shuffle in stand-up situations because it's easy to do without a table, has more "style" than a riffle shuffle, makes a lovely feathering sound on the bridge (my favorite part ), and provides for easy controls.
Plus, as a woman I find that I often need to establish credibility with men right away (something I will always have in common with new magicians, who struggle to be taken seriously). A casual Faro shuffle says to a lay audience that I know my way around a deck of cards, without having to show off or do a bunch of needless flourishes or finger-flinging (though sometimes I will do it one-handed as my version of showing off ).

An overhand shuffle fits best for me in a stand-up situation. Letting a spectator shuffle is even better.
Could be that I'm "leaning away" from it because I rarely use it anymore, but I have the feeling that doing faros all the time makes a lay audience think - "He, or she, is 'doing something.'" To be entirely truthful - I do use the faro under certain circumstances, within certain routines - when it doesn't have to be perfect - and always saying - "This is how they make sure cards are really mixed in gambling casinos."

I guess I got into the habit of Faros because I'm cognizant that women have historically started from a "one down" position vis a vis the audience and have to establish their bonafides, when men do not, especially with cards. That may not be so much the case anymore, I don't know. On the italics thing, you just put brackets "[]" before what you want to write, and brackets with a slash "[/]" after what you want to write. And within the brackets you put an "i" to italicize, a "b" if you want it bold, and a "u" if you want it underlined. I can't show you exactly because it becomes code and just disappears when I try it. But it's just like you do with your email address in your signature line.

The closing bracket will be /i or /b or /u and NOT i/ etc.

I'll try it with my name Harry Lorayne to see if I understand. I'm a terrible computer person.

I think it just works with bold and italics, and not underline.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".
