You know how exciting it is when you purchase a great magic trick that you know you will actually use?
Well, the Eli Dice Box, based on the original Thayer model, is one of those tricks for me. It's made of beautiful mahogany like the original Thayer version and it comes with ivory colored dice for that slightly aged look. Jake Jr. and his brother make them and Jake sells them for $75. And, it's worth every penny, IMO. I believe they also make some of the boxes in exotic woods, as well. I guess the trick itself isn't quite as obscure as I thought it was, but I still don't think many magicians are doing it. I know Richard Gerlitz had a version that was very ornate and expensive. Personally, I like the plain mahogany box better than the ornate Gerlitz Oriental Dice Box. The Eli Dice Box comes with a copy of the original Thayer instructions; however, I prefer the Gerlitz routine. I think it's a much better routine. Basically, three dice are placed inside the box by the spectator and the magician writes down a prediction. The box is shaken three times by the magician and the spectator writes down the total of the three dice each time. The spectator can even dump the dice out and place them back in the box halfway through the routine and the magician does not need to even look at the dice. Yet, when the spectator adds up his total it always matches the prediction. And, it's a different total and prediction every time. It actually fooled me the first few times I did it. I just wanted to mention how pleased I am with my new acquisition and recommend it to anyone who might like this type of routine. The props are beautiful and the trick itself is very clever. The box and dice are un-gimmicked, BTW. And, this is not a Sure Shot Dice Box. It's a completely different method. Robert |

Thank you for your kind words Robert. We're so glad you are pleased with it. My brother Frederick deserves all the work credit. I got to smell fresh Mahogany for 2 weeks

I am looking for a wooden sure shot dice box. I think that effect is better suited for me than the Eli box (less effort for the audience to calculate etc). Any ideas of where I can find a sure shot dice box, either wooden or leather (but basically not the cheap plastic type)?

My brother Frederick just turned 2 of them this past weekend. One in Amboyna Burl and the other in African Red Mahogany. They are identical to the 1950's version with the convex and concave version.
But I know they are no where as low as 25.00, It took him over 2 hours to turn each one due to the convex curves on the inside of the box, they have to be spot on for the effect to work. If you're interested PM me, I'm not sure if he's making anymore soon. Jake Jr.

This sounds like a great effect, and I'd like to try my hand at making my own version. Is there anywhere I can find the instructions for this (I'd be happy to pay for it, of course), so that I can make my own? Has it been described in any books, preferrably available online?

Mroek,

This evening I decided to make my own version of this trick, a trick that I really like in all its simplicity. I posted about my version over in the workshop, if anyone would like to see how it turned out:

How does the Gerlitz routine differ from the Thayer routine?

I think Dice Boxes are among the least appreciated items in magic and mentalism. I really love these. They have a lot going for them: elegant simplicity, no parts to break, no batteries to replace, clear effect.
I have just posted about “Elijah”, my routine which utilizes the Eli’s Dice Box to a greater extent. It is a three phased routine that makes this much more than a stunt. It also does not utilize a prediction. More info is here: https://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/view......orum=159 Regards, Sean |
