Earlier today I watched Veering from the Royal Road by Sleightlyobsessed. This a video-bundle containing 3 effects, which are his variations of 3 effects from the book, The Royal Road to Card Magic by Jean Hugard and Frederick Braue. He writes in the description that he has "reinvented them to make them more direct. Using modern sleights and construction ideas”. The three effects are: A Card and A Number, Now You See It and Designed for Laughter.
I started out with card college, so I have honestly not read The Royal Road to Card Magic. Therefore I could not see the changes he made to the different effects. But he talked briefly about main changes he had made to the method and the construction of the effects. So I could kinda imagine how the effects might have looked like originally. He also has a copy of Royal Road with him in the video, and shows you on which page you can find the original effects. The video-quality was okay, but not as good as when you buy a download from a bigger magic company. This was no problem for me, especially because the teaching was really good. It was comfortable to listen to him talk, and he didn’t rush through the effects. The construction of the tutorials also made it easier to follow along. Each tutorial consisted of four parts: in the first part we see a full performance of the effect, with a spectator, in a casual setting, in the second part he talks briefly about the effect, in the third part he teaches the moves that are used to accomplish the effect, and in the fourth part he goes through the effect step by step where he talks about the construction of the effect and the justification for the necessary actions. I felt he explained everything really well and didn’t leave out any details. When he teaches the moves he assumes that you have some card technique foundation, so he does not teach you how to get a pinkie brake, the dribble or the overhand shuffle. But he does give some tips for where you can find good explanations for these moves. Now more specific about the tricks. A Card and A Number This is a version of the ACAAN plot, where a selection ends up at a thought of number and the magician is able to divine the thought of number. I really liked this effect because of how all the actions are naturally justified. The method is really clever, and I have in the past been a sceptic to one of the principles used, but the way it is used in this effect made me a believer. You also learn a cool variation on the Miller Table Cut/Control (that I will definitely use for other tricks too). An impromptu ACAAN I will definitely try out. Now you see it In this effect a selection is made and the magician tries to find the selection. The spectator thinks the trick has gone wrong, but at the end, the card that spectator is holding changes in to the selection. This is an effect I will definitely use. Maybe that’s because this trick goes straight in to the category of the tricks I like to perform, or its just a really good trick. Can’t wait to try it out. Designed for laughter This is definitely my favourite effect of all three. This is a version of the Lie Detector Test plot, where the magician divines the selection through reading the spectator, and ends up with finding the selection and all its mates, all in a magical way. Its hard to explain how much I love this effect. Summed up I think this is a really good buy. The bundle only costs 15 £, so its actually really cheap when you think about what you get from it. If you love great card magic that is straight to the point but with a twist at the end (but not a confusing twist), I highly recommend it. You can buy it here: https://gumroad.com/l/VFTRR If you are still not sure about buying it, there are some videos on his Instagram showing reactions from all the effects, as well as a full performance of one of the effects: https://www.instagram.com/sleightlyobsessed/ |
