Mine didn't work smoothly either at first but after I kept working it for a while it is okay.
No pun intended.

RNK, did it get worse before it started working? I don't want to give to much info, but the sleeve on mine is frayed on the inside. I'm not sure how this can get 'better' with more use. It is fraying more, if that makes sense.

I ended using some invisible on the inside, once the inside started fraying. That seems to have helped. If the edge of the sleeve frays (mine did because I use it a lot) you can just use a cheap cardboard nail file and smooth the edges, then clean up any white paper or white areas by going over them in black sharpie. That seems to have done the trick for me.
There will always be someone better at some things than you are. There will always be someone worse at some things than you are. All you can really do in the end, is aim to be better than you were yesterday.

Great idea, but not made to last. The sleeve should have been made of plastic. Mine started fraying after 2 hours of practice. I fixed it with tape but still started to fray again. Love the idea, but in the end its not a worker. Sent it back to penguin. I wanted to like this but it won't last.

Yes. Mine started fraying almost from the start. Never did work correctly and was unusable after some practice with it on the first day. Even more disappointing is Penguin has not responded in over two weeks. They gave me one response asking for a picture of the problem. I sent them picture and have not heard from them since. Have emailed them 4 times. I don't normally post problems publicly but this is a little frustrating and don't know how to get them to respond. This is honestly the first problem I've had with Penguin's customer service in years of ordering from them. Giving them the benefit of the doubt and hoping for a response soon.

I've actually had to deal with Penguins customer service a couple times in the past few months. I never email them, I go right to the live chat (during business hrs) and they quickly resolve my issues ( including faulty product issues )........try the chat Pastor Mickey

Dman11, thank you for the tip. I will try that first thing in the morning.

This long thread has put me off buying Smooth due to a lack of manufacturing consistency. Is it still the case people are receiving a faulty/sticky gimmick? Or have these production problems now been resolved? I'd appreciate any feedback from recent purchasers. Thanks

I've had mine since 2019 at it's always worked flawlessly. Great EDC item!
