I can tell you my hands used to shake like crazy despite growing up on stage performing. Not only does scripting and rehearsal make a huge difference, but remember that the tricks are not as obvious to lay people. I used to be incredibly sensitive to guilty moves and worry constantly that they're going to see me do something or figure something out. It took me a long time to realize that my knowledge of magic and methods was far beyond what the average audience member knew and I had to have faith in the trick itself. Once I could believe in the trick, it was much easier to stop worrying about pushing my limitations as a beginner magician.

All of these suggestions are great. I would only want to add something that I have found helpful over the years.
A totally memorized script will do a lot for your nerves. Anything that stops your presentation even for a blink will decrease your power and confidence. Pitchmen rely on their totally memorized script--it is like a juggernaut that carries everyone in the audience along with it. Memorized speech when presented with enthusiasm and apparent spontaneity indicates to the audience a quick and knowledgeable brain. It will give a performer much greater confidence, and prevent that cornered feeling that comes from not knowing what to say next. Writing out a complete script, and memorizing it the way an actor memorizes a part is one of the best ways to achieve the power and confidence that will ease your nervousness. |
