When my Okito box lid is placed on the box in the "regular" way, it lifts off fine. When reversed the lid clings to the box, apparently due to a slight vacuum created between the lid and box. I can hold it by the lid alone and shake it, and the box will slooowly slide out and finally drop off. This can take from 2-8 seconds or more, making the box look suspicious (if not downright goofy).
Does anyone have any hints on handling or fixing the box? |

Get a pin vise and a #65 or smaller drill (any hobby shop catering to model railroaders has these) and drill a small hole in the lid. That will release any vacumn.

You probably got a defected box. Both sides of the box probably not the same diameter. The bottom side is probably a hair bigger then the top so it fits more snug on the lid which causes it to slowly slide out.
If that is the problem dont drill a hole in the lid, it wont help and you can try taking it back to where ever you bought it or send it back to the company.

You could try this "quick and easy" fix, if you're a capable "do-it-yourselfer": place a fairly thin, but sturdy piece of cloth overthe bottom of the box, and force the lid down into position, trapping the cloth. Release the lid by pulling on the cloth, and see if you've successfully flanged out the id just enough to defeat any seals. (how did those seals get in here?)
This works with a thin lid, and is also the quick fix if you've dented the lid a little. Make sure your cloth is strong, or you'll have a heck of a time removing the lid without wrecking the box. Good luck, write if it works.....

I finally solved my problem. I wasn't thrilled by drilling, and when i tried the cloth it got stuck and I had a devil of a time getting it off; it helped a little but not enough.
Finally, I used some superfine sandpaper (600 grit) and carefully sanded down the sides at the bottom of the box, testing frequently as I went along. The paper was so fine it took a while, but didn't leave any deep scratches. I then used Brasso to polish up the whole box, and it looks and works great now. Thanks for the help! |
