I've noticed a huge resurgence recently in the short con performance of 'The Circus Card Trick'. Anyone else experiencing this lately? Wondering if it could be a natural waxing & waning of popularity inherent in an old standard?

Funny you mention this, as I stumbled back across it after many, many years. It perhaps was the first card trick I ever learned as a kid. But over the years, I never played with it much, probably because of it's plainess. But I had begun from time to time seeing people doing it with a little flair, and it steered me back to it toward re-thinking it.
I came across a better way of presenting it (IMHO) rather than the "short con" take you spoke of, aiming more toward a "just think of the card" aspect. That made it different for me. Also, I always thought that just allowing cuts to the cards was too simple. So, I took a page out of Bill Malone's book as to giving the cards a lot of quick shuffles and doing the dirty work within it. It all makes for a really refreshed take on the old trick. It seems more baffling to the specs, and fair & clean. I often times have them shuffle the cards first. Then allow them to select any card they want before the shuffling. I guess I sorta replaced the cutting with more believable shuffling actions. Anyway, it seems to make the old trick a much better delivered routine and nicer overall presentation. I do it all the time now because it just looks so fair and amazes people, plus it's got a lot of nice moves to it I like to practice.

Hi lord wallmotto. Mostly the Toronto area.
Pleasure to be reading your post MB. I've enjoyed several of your insightful posts in various sections around the Café. Always a treat. Paradoxically, what you've written is what I'm seeing in this case. It's almost a 'Lazy Man's Three-Card Monte' in a gambling context without the flawlessly executed hype move & Mexican turnover. The new variant on the Circus Card Trick involves shuffling & dirty work as you state. These enhancements also increase the bafflement over the original version as you also noted. Old is once again new. |

When you get right down to it, it's basically nothing more than a revelation of a known card, which means that when most people learn it the main way, we've got a bunch of other ways to go. Like, I can name four alternate methods off the top of my head, and I struggle with long division.

I rarely see this effect presented, but I've been performing this effect since I first read it (ages ago) in RRTCM. It's an excellent trick that always elicits surprise and laughter.
@Mb, if you present this trick as a "think of a card", I suggest you look up ECT's The Twenty-Sixth Location, which is the Circus Card Trick followed by a subtle and baffling mental effect. This truly is a self-working hidden gem. |

I thought this trick sounded familiar, I am currrently reading Card College Light and just went over this trick. I seem to recall reading about this trick elsewhere as well.

Thanks Claudio for suggesting that trick, it's a nice take on it alright.
And though "The Circus Card Trick" is an old one, it becomes new again once you spice it up a bit, burying the secret deeper and deeper within the demonstration of it all. Funny, it's one of the first card tricks I ever learned as a kid, and all these many years later, it's still with me but better. As I got better with cards, so did the trick.
