I think nothing kills a show like rooting around a case looking for something and when the prop does emerge it is a tangled mess. So, I want my case to do the following. First, It should hold props in place so I know where they are, so I'm not looking for them. Second, they should be ready to go when they are removed from the case: in the correct orientation, not tangled. This way I can start the routine as soon as the prop clears the case. Third, the case hold the props in the order they are performed in the show. I don't want to have to dig past the finally to get to the opener.
With that in mind I removed all the pockets and what not from my case and add prop specific holders to it. In the first attached figure you can see the holders and in the second figure you can see what they are holding. The boxes are held in place using rubber cement, so they are always in the same spos. The props are held firmly and don't move under normal conditions. The props in the early part of the show sketch pad card rise and the diablo aren't being blocked by the stuff that shows up later like the rope. Click here to view attached image. |

Wravyn, thank you!. The smaller holders are made from cheap 3/16 in ply. I got it the sheet in the damaged bin at Home Depot. They are simply butt jointed and pined with a 23 gauge pin nailer. The pins aren't strictly necessary, but they make the clamp-up easier. The bigger holder has good 1/2 in ply on the ends and the same construction as the small boxes. The diablo holder is 1/2 in ply with a threaded 3/4 in dowel screwed into a tapped hole. The threaded dowel is completely over the top for the application, but I had some for another project and didn't want it to go to waste. There is also a 3/8 in dowel glued to the 3/4 in dowel, because the diablo was a skosh too low. The thing holding the rope is a bent coat hanger in two 5/64 in holes. Turns out coat hangers, the ones I have anyway, fit in the a 5/64 in whole snugly enough to not need glue, at least for this application. The wand holder was made from some scrap maple and is the only part he audience will see.
I don't know if I like the square shape of the wand holder. Any thoughts out there? Should I go oval, really round off the conners, or leave it as is? |

I’d round off the corners of the wand holder to avoid catching a sleeve or something on it....

The wand holder could be utilized as a name sign holder also since it is going to be towards the audience. As far as the shape is concerned, it will be a personal preference.
Great job and thanks for sharing how you made the holders. May you have a successful 2019. |
