You can buy 400w construction site lights for 5-20$ from any normal market (they are very commonly used in filming). If you are going to use any strong light, don't point them directly at your set, use some cloth to soften it.
The more lights you have, better quality image. Its good to have couple construction site lights pointing to walls far away, just to give some ambience light. Set the iris -2 steps down. Use playing card white surface to determine the automatic iris level, once its set, switch it to manual and set it down -2 steps. You can see in the DEALT trailer it has that dark layer, its filmed maybe with -2 or -3. In editing, use gamma curve tool to push up the contrast. Use middle wheel in 3-way color corrector tool to give color mood. For good software, I recommend Sony Vegas Video Pro. Its very easy and it has great tools. |

Sorry for my novice level skills in photography. Do you mean take the f stop specified by Manual and lower it by two stops e.g. from 5.6 to 2.8?
So the goal is to brighten up the shot and then increase the contrast via software? Mike

Sounds to me like EV (exposure compensation) stops down which would mean *higher* f-number (or a faster shutter) which would *under*expose... Not sure why, though. Perhaps it gives it more of a black-art ambiance, or it makes for an easier capture at 60 fps?

I mean to always shoot under exposed footage, so the white surfaces are littlebit grayish, and image has dark layer, not pure whites, then use gamma curve, or other contrast tools to push the contrast higher than you normally could. You don't overburn the highs while you crank the contrast and you have more leverage to push the image look better. Specially white playing card surface can lose texture very easily if you add some contrast later.
If auto iris set the levels to 2.8, switch to manual iris and set it around 5. |

My impression is that quality footage is a function of lights, camera, and video editing software.
Those 400w construction site lights seem promising. Here is a 29-minute live performance of mine: https://youtu.be/lq2Rj1uf05M I used to be quite sensitive to criticism; I am much less so now; so, please do criticize my technique, presentation, and posts. With low or poor lighting, yes you will need to open the iris of the camera.
This usually results in a poor picture (sharpness) and impacts depth of field. Due to work, I will not be able to contribute as much as I would like. When possible I will pop in. |

Darned work. It cramps my style too.

Please use music as little as possible.
And you do not need special effects for transitions. A simple fade from/to black, and a dissolve when necessary. |

Great call on "use simple transition e.g. fades etc."

Hi Jerry, I am currently selecting effects for my next video production. By the end of January, I plan to have 1. selected the effects and 2. created an outline. I have some equipment including a decent camera and a professional (albeit small) table. If all goes according to plan, the production quality will be a small improvement over my previous video (which is in my Café signature). Thank you for asking... it keeps me accountable.
