Hey Fellow Magi!
I have a librarian who has been very good to me and her community over the years. One of her fellow librarians emailed me and told me she is retiring after 30 years. In fact her last day is on the day I am performing one of my annual shows for her. She did not tell me this but I suspect she planned my show before she was leaving as it is a little earlier this year than usual. I have been asked to do something special (How could I not!). Look, I'm an average performer, my magic is more of story telling with magic as my 45 minute program involves just 8 routines with a rabbit at the end. I thought of making a cake appear (Not sure how yet). I'm asking my compeers and friends of magic for help. Thoughts/suggestions are much appreciated!!! Click here to view attached image. |

Mike Bent had a production from a birthday card in Magic Magazine, March 2013, which was an adaptation of Grant's Temple Screen. The original prop is in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx1BrQbyIkU Mike printed a custom oversized greeting card, and showed the card front and back...it said "Happy Happy Happy Happy" in different fonts and colors on one side, then "Birthday Birthday Birthday Birthday" on the other. Then he rolled it up and produced a bunch of stuff from it, finishing with a party popper that shoots streamers into the air. This could be adapted to a "Thank you!" card format, so you unfold the card so it shows "Thank Thank Thank Thank" and then turn it around so it says, "You! You! You! You!" etc. Then roll it up, or fold it into a triangle, and produce fun stuff from inside that you give her. If you have a subscription to Genii, you can look this up in their online back issues. |

Just thought of another approach...you know that trick where you show a briefcase, open it up, and pull out a bowling ball? How about adapting it to a book? Find one of those hollow books at a store like Bed Bath and Beyond, or Pier One, that are designed like a small box. Then cut the back out and gimmick it the same way as the briefcase. Then you can take out a book, open it and pull out something bigger.
Here's a version of the idea on The Carbonaro Effect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucZt-gTKucs Of course you won't be able to make it quite this impressive, it will be closer to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_tlYk7F0zI If you don't use a heavy object like a bowling ball then it won't give itself away as easily! Maybe it's better with a cardboard box like Carbonaro did. |

A book test should be in the show.
Any trick that asks for information or input that is personal to her. Mental Epic using her favorite food or book or character would be the type of trick I'm talking about. There are many mental tricks that could work. Say something in your performance that makes clear how you and library patrons appreciated her support over the years. It can be just in passing if you write it so it is is perspicuous. I'm betting you engage all sorts of people in your shows all the time. The fact that you know this Gal personally is throwing you off. Mary Mowder |

If you’ve a picture of you and her from past performance, you could do Shawn Farquhar’s Torn 2 Pieces. Would make a great memento for her

I'd love to hear what you decided to do and how you and the crowd thought it went over.
