Can't believe this has been 50 years ago. Saturday Feb 22nd 1969

Was watching ABC's Wide World Of Sports and they announced that they'd be showing video of a crash that took place earlier that day in the 300 mile "Sportsman" race at Daytona Int. Speedway. The announcer said to "be warned" that this crash of driver Don MacTavish "..is of a very violent nature" so I knew it had to be bad...it was worse.

Don had lost control of his car and in trying to steer out of it, shot across the track and hit a metal gate. When it gave way, the open concrete wall edge took the entire front of the car off...and it got worse from there.

ABC had their cameras set up to tape the Daytona 500 the next day and recorded the crash right after he hit the gate/wall.
