Wow, first Juan and now Pepe Carroll...
https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/magic/......g-glass/ In the magic world, 52 Lovers, volumes 1 and 2 now enjoy the well-deserved status of modern classic. Sixteen years after their publication, Páginas Publishing is proud to revise this legendary work as 52 Lovers Through the Looking-Glass, consisting of a new, corrected and extended translation of the original books, containing unpublished material previously known only to a few privileged people. 52 Lovers Through the Looking-Glass combines the original two volumes into a single book, and included, for the first time ever, are all the articles that Pepe Carroll published in the Madrid Magic School’s renowned Circular over the course of almost twenty years. In addition, the book includes the description of two of the hardest routines from Carroll’s repertoire, whose secrets have been unknown up to now: his legendary dice routine and the act that won him the first prize in Card Magic in the 1988 FISM Congress that took place in The Hague! Finally, a chapter with examples of Carroll’s famous humor is also included, as well as the artist’s photos and biographical sketches and dedications written by his fellow magicians. Judging by its scope and the quality of the material it contains, 52 Lovers Through the Looking-Glass is bound to become a literary classic in the field of Spanish magic. Above all, it aims to be a heartfelt and loving homage paid by Spain’s magic community to one of the greatest figures in the history of Spanish magic. All of them are outstanding because of their subtle methods and rigorous construction. The effects themselves are fascinating and the patter has a unique literary elegance. |

Just came across this myself Tim. I take it this is an English translation? I see it advertised in the UK, so I assume it is. Had thought it was only printed in Spanish.

I just bought a copy from Vanishing inc.s web site. Most magic sites are selling it for $75.00 and up, but Vanishing Inc. has it for $70.00 with free shipping. To think I was about ready to spend some big bucks for Volume 1 when it appeared in my web searches. This reprint of 52 Lovers Volume 1 & 2 combined with additional material sold out on some of the leading web sites, but the publisher is already reprinting the book to have it arrive sometime in October this year. If your holding out for copies of the original first editions, I would bet that this year or next they will listed on ebay, now that there is an revised replacement for them.

Roberto Giobbi, in Card College Vol. 2, in the theory chapter, in the section of "Construction", mentions Jose as a source to understand the subject, along with Vernon & Slydini.
Would that be good for you? The contents of the book I believe are available in Denis Behr's website. Jose was a huge fan of Lewis Carroll (Carroll-> Carroll, do you get it?). Many of his routines involve semi-poetic presentations around mirrors, alchemy, etc. For example his "All Backs" routine is performed with a Tarot deck of cards, and all the presentation is about a certain alchemist who created the elements, etc. But nothing too "heavy" or boring; just good presentation. His "Cannibals" routine involves many comic elements, as for example, making a mustache appear, and small bones, and a lettuce... and the cannibals "losing" their stomachs... He has transpositions with cards inside glasses or pinned to the table "Card to Wall" using a wood panel and 3 selected signed cards He has a beautiful version of the progressive 4 ace routine with a beautiful patter about mythological birds... truly great He is also the one who brought the subject of "verticalization" of magic (as far as I know). There is a "vertical" version of Oil and Water. A very funny ambitious card where a calculator controls the playing card and many many more There are interesting sleights as well, for ex handling of double lift, etc. Hope this is good for you

Hi,
I've just begun reading 52 Lovers through the looking glass, and have come across an interesting reference. At one point he mentions "Ferragut's Etruscan Shuffle, to separate the blacks from the reds". Would anybody be able to tell me what that is, or any idea where it may be found? Many thanks, Sam |

I really like this book, the constructions of his routines are very clear to an audience.

I was not aware of that, but as a confirmation its good to hear. I really enjoy the deep thinking that goes on with certain magicians ( in particular, the spanish school)
