I recently purchased a set of Hindu cups and balls. They're gorgeous, but the handling is completely different than the standard type of cups and balls routine. This is because of the way you are supposed to hold the cups. Are there any good books or videos on the Hindu style of cups?

The routine is printed in Genii Magazine back in the 1970's or 1980's.
Morrissey Products give the routine with their set of Indian Cups and Balls. That is the only place I know it is printed. |

Well, if you had bought MY Hindu Cups, you would have gotten about three amazing routines.
However, IF, and it is a big IF... you can find Eddie Joseph's books on the cups and balls (they show up on ebay) you will find material there. Then again, make up your own routine. You will find out many good things can be done with these cups. What brand did you get???? There is a chance I will be marketing more sets soon.

I don't know what brand they were. I purchased them recently from Hocus Pocus. Thanks for your PM Pete, I'll probably take you up on your offer!

I saw the cups on hocus-pocus... I have not handled them, but they look OK for the standard Indian moves, but won't work for my stuff.

I find that the Hocus Pocus cups are a little too deep for some of the moves recommended. Since I'm pretty sure I'm holding the cups correctly, I will need to figure out some alternate handlings. Thanks!

Frankly, having just looked over all the cups (Hindu style) in my collection, the ones you describe are really the wrong shape.
You have to be able to hold the cup by the know between your first and second fingers, extended, palm flat, level with table and get a classic palmed ball under the cup when you place it down.

The old Genii article also explained how to make your own cups from the Indian Bells that were so popular back then. Just cut off the claw type fingers.

I have a set of Pete Biro's Jadoowalla (Hindu) Cups & Balls. They're stunning!
Silver, with Gold inserts, a "flare", or bell-shape, plus knobs that can eliminate a sleight, and puts you "clean" for a moment...and a nice, bamboo wand... If you ever get the chance, do not, I mean DO NOT miss out on this. This set is a centerpiece on my Dining Room table. That's how much class these have. Haven't spoken with ya in awhile, Pete...just thought I'd chime in, with a testimonial. Wish I could post a pic of these cups, but I have no website to URL to, but a picture really would not do these justice. Pete Biro Hindu Cups...my #1 recommendation! Doug |

Many thanks. I was at Joe Porper's today going over a handfull of Indian cup designs... and found that those that are on the market are ALMOST all the wrong shape. The bell shape is TOO TALL... you can't do the Indian load with them.
I am hoping to produce more later (going on vacation tomorrow) and also there might be a deluxe set from Porper made in a different way. Anyway, thanks again Doug... I will be taking my set on vacation to use when I can do some table magic.

Thanks Pete! At least I know it isn't just me. I always thought my cups were too deep for the moves required. But I guess the good news is that there may be a market for new routines using the mismade Indian cups.
I have only been able to do a modified Indian load by classic palming and holding the ball against the side of the cup closest to me. The release/load is a little tricky, but I'm trying to work on it to make it look more natural.

Maybe you can saw off the bottom mouth to lower the cup... the Indian's DO NOT use large loads... but usually a change to a slightly larger ball (one that just fits) or in my case I load 2-inch sponge balls and go into a "in her hand" bit.

If Pete produces more of these, I have only one addition I'd recommend:
Go down to YFCS (Your Favorite Carpet Store), and buy a remnant, one of those 11" x 17" samples they usually have stacked, and pick out a short-shag, dark (forest) green, or grass-green one as a close-up pad. The red balls, silver & gold cups and wand stand out starkly against the green background and "kicks this up a notch", IMO. Doug |
